NEW CARGO SHIPS

OFFICERS APPOINTED By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, October 5. The Union Company announces the following appointments to the new cargo ships Kakapo and Kahika:— Kakapo—Master, Captain D. N. Mclelsh; chief officer, Mr R. B. Steere; chief engineer, Mr A. Thomson. Kahika Master, Captain N. M. Bonetti; chief officer, Mr J. E. B. Broughton; chief engineer, Mr R. W. Feeney. Mr McLeish was born at Dunedin in 1894 and served his time in sail. Recently he has commanded the Kara, Kaimiro and Kauri. Mr Steere was born in England in 1902 and joined the Union Company in 1925. He has served in the Manuka, Waipahi, Maori, Wahine, Rangatlra, Monowai, Makura and NiagaraMr Thomson was born in Scotland in 1890 and joined the Union Company in 1920. He was chief engineer of the Waitaki for her maiden voyage In 1933. Mr Bonetti was born at Reefton in 1900. He has served in the Maori, Wahine, Rangitira, Makura and Maunganul. He commanded the Kalmai in 1936 and later was transferred to the Koranui and Ngatoro on the Australian coast.

Mr Broughton was born in England In 1899, and was appointed chief officer of the Poolta this year. Subsequently he was sent Home to stand by the Kahika in a similar capacity. Mr Feeney was born in Queensland in 1899 and served in the Australian Navy fqr three years. He joined the Union company in 1924 and was appointed to the Matua for her maiden voyage in 1936.
