VOTING OF LEAGUE
SURPRISES FOR SPAIN AND TURKEY United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright GENEVA, September 20. The Assembly of the League of Nations rejected, by 24 to 23 votes, the Spanish claim for re-eligibility for election to the Council, for which a two-thirds majority is required. Five ballot papers were spoiled. The Assembly also rejected, by 25 to 25 votes, Turkey’s request for reelection. As Peru and Iran are the only candidates 'or the seats vacated by Spain and Turkey, it 13 certain they will be elected. Probably either Hungary or Belgium will be elected to the remaining seat. Spain’s non-election to the Council was largely due to the breakdown of negotiations with the -nerican countries, which sought the speedy evacuation of the refugees from the Legations at Madrid.
INTEREST IN UNITED STATES REPRESENTATION AT GENEVA United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright GENEVA, September 20. The Amen.: lolomatic representative in Switzerland has been instructed that the United States will be represented on the Committee of 23 countries formed at the time of Japan’s aggression in Manchuria, which will now be resummoned to advise the Assembly on the latest Far East developments. The United States Minister at Berne will be the delegate attending, rather as an observer than a plenipotentiary.
