EMPIRE DEFENCE
BRITAIN’S CONTRIBUTION TO PEACE (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, September 21. In the House of Representatives today speaking on the Address-in-Reply debate, Mr Burnett (Nat., Temuka), referred to matters of Empire defence. The rearmament programme in Great he said, had done more than all the peace conferences and assemblies of the League of nations, because the only argument at present that the world could understand was that of force. Great Britain had earned the thanks of the Dominion, but at the same time there was a dangerous apathy in New Zealand concerning defence matters. The Government owed the country a detailed explanation of its attitude toward Empire defence and of the progress made by its expert committees in drawing up plans to provide for any state of national emergency. “One matter of great regret occurred when the Prime Minister made his statement regarding the foolishness of thrift,” Mr Burnett said. “He argued that Individual savings were useless, and that we should save as a nation through national superannuation schemes. There is r.bout £790,000,000 of private wealth in New Zealand, and everything depends on what the State can realise on these taxable reserves. This shows the importance of reasonable thrift to the Country.”
