IMPROVED VITAL STATISTICS British Official Wireless RUGBY, September 18. The quarterly return of the Regis-trar-General for England and Wales shows there were 6215 more births in the second quarter this year than In the corresponding quarter of 1936. The total was 163,867. The birthrate was 16.1 per thousand of the estimated midyear population. Of the births, 84.023 were males and 79,844 females. Fewer infants under one year died, the mortality being 54 per 1000 births. The natural increase of population by excess of births over deaths Was 45.343. The highest total in the corresponding quarters of three preceding years was 38,112 in 1935.
