WRESTLING

SCIENTIFIC CONTESTS AMATEUR TITLES By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, September 20. Scientific virile matcraft distinguished the contests for the New Zealand Amateur Wrestling championships held in the Wellington Town Hall today. Wellington representatives won five of the seven weights. The eliminatory rounds occupied all morning and afternoon, and the finals were held as preliminaries for to-night’s professional match. The standard of wrestling was particularly bright and in the finals notably so. L. Nolan, winner of the bantam weight, gave a most outstanding exhibition. The great general improvement noticeable even since last year reflects the increased interest and progress manifested by many wrestling clubs now established throughout the country. The contests were refereed by Mr J. Creek. Results of the finals were as follow: Bantam Weight L. Nolan (Wellington) Bst 751 b beat S. Todd (Canterbury) Bst 91b, by two falls Nolan, who gave a very polished exhibition, pinned his opponent with a body press in the second round and with a headlock and press in the third. Feather Weight J. F. Genet (Canterbury) 9st 51b beat W. Balderstone (West Coast) Bst 131 b, by two falls. He took the offensive throughout, and obtained falls in the second and third rounds with a headlock and press in each case. Light Weight V. Thomas (Wellington) 9st 121 b beat J. A. Mclnnes (Canterbury) 9st 1251 b on points. Thomas took the offensive and several times had Mclnnes in serious difficulties. He was unlucky to obtain no fall. Welter Weight J. Podjursky (West Coast North Island) lOst 1011 b beat H. Wilson (Canterbury) lOst 111 b on points. The bout was very even, but Podjursky appeared to have the advantage of strength and experience. Middle Weight H. R. Godfrey (Wellington) 12st 121 b beat P. Razos (Hawke’s Bay) list 751 b on points. Razos spent most of the bout in a huddle on the mat, countering Godfrey’s efforts to turn him over, and the latter established an easy lead cn points. Light-Heavy Weight T Anderson (Wellington) 13st 21b beat C. Passmore (Auckland) 13st 31b on points in a very lively bout. Anderson was unlucky not to be awarded a fall in the last round when he pressed Passmore’s shoulder for a moment to the mat. Heavy Weight J. H. Drydan (Wellington; 17st beat B. Norton (Auckland) 13st 951 b on points. Dryden had a great advantage in weight and strength, and although Norton showed considerable science, he was quite unable to cope with the bigger man. In the preliminary rounds, in the welter-weight division, Scudder (Hawke’s Bay) beat Conley (South Canterbury) in straight falls. In the heavy-weight division B. Norton (Auckland) beat A. Cameron (South Canterbury) by two falls.

ROUGH AND TUMBLE BOUT

By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, September 20. Rough and tumble wrestling was seen at the Wellington Town Hall to-night when, before a large crowd, Vic Christie and Frank Judson drew, one fall each. Highlights of the bout were when Christie entangled his opponent in the ropes and proceeded to pummel him, :.e referee (Mr All Jenkins) having t: haul him off by the hair before he could rescue Judson; when Judson held Christie in an Indian death!:ik but failed to take a submission; when Christie took a submission fall with a figure-four body scissors and when Judson set the score even with a pin T after a giant swing.

LIVELY BOUT IN AUCKLAND

By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, September 20.

Cautioned on several occasions for slowness in breaking when ordered to do so by the referee, Don Nolan was finally disqualified in the seventh round of a professional heavyweight wrestling contest against Lofty Blomfield.

Prior to this each man had secured a fall, and Nolan appeared to have an advantage on points. The seventh round opened in lively fashion, with both contestants punching and jolting wildly. Bioinfield was knocked through the ropes and Nolan, refusing to allow his opponent to regain his feet, maintained a barrage of jolts to Blomfield's jaw.

The referee attempted to break the men, but in the ensuing melee, he was knocked off his feet. Nolan then lifted Blomfield and dumped him hard, but the referee broke the wrestlers and raised the New Zealander’s arm as an indication that Nolan had been disqualified.
