SUCCESS IN NAVAL ENCOUNTER
ATTACKS ON NEUTRAL AIRCRAFT United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright BILBAO, September 8. The insurgents claim that the cruiser Baleares inflicted serious damage on the Government cruiser Libertad, and on several Government trawlers. Rebel radio stations report that the Baleares picked up 52 sailors from the loyalist cruiser, Libertad, after they had taken to the boats, and imprisoned them at Cadiz. Reports of the outcome of the naval battle are still conflicting, and it is thought to have been indecisive, no ships having been sunk. BRITAIN TO THE RESCUE PLIGHT OF WAR REFUGEES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyrlgh t LONDON, September 8. After an urgent request from the International Red Cross, Britain is chartering a steamer to assist in evacuating to Marseilles 4000 refugees, who are sheltering in the Embassies at Madrid. In addition the hospital ship Maine is taking refugees of nonmilitary age. The British Government has chartered the steamer Gibel Zerjon to evacuate 4000 refugees from Madrid. The steamer will transport 100 on each journey, beginning towards the end of the current week. FRENCH AEROPLANE BROUGHT DOWN NATIONALIST AIR ACTIVITY United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright BAYONNE, September 8. The Spanish Nationalist squadron chased a French commercial aeroplane near Gijon and brought it down in flames. The pilot was fatally burned.
