DOMAIN CYCLE TRACK

QUESTION OF ASPHALTING At the meeting of the Geraldine Domain Board, Mr T. J. Paterson, secretary of the Geraldine Sports’ Association, advised that it was the Intention of the Association to provide the cost of tne material required to put the cycling track in good order if sufficient funds were available from the queen carnival. The Association recommended that the width of the track be reduced to a minimum necessary for holding cycling events. In his report the borough foreman, Mr G. E. Berry stated that it was important that some definite decision be made about the repairs to the cycle track and the width to be relaid, owing to the necessity of building the track up with spoil from the remaining draining work. The true condition of the embankment had only now become apparent through the lorries passing over it, and in its present water-logged condition It would be very unsatisfactory to seal it on such an unstable foundation.

Cr. J. R. Lack: If the funds are not there the work of asphalting the track wil. not be done.

Cr P. H. Davis: Well, we will go on with the simplified scheme of grassing the track. There might be enough money to asphalt part of it.

Cr. H. Russell: What does the Association mean by “putting the track in good order?” That is a different matter from asphalting it.

Cr. Davis: When Cr. Sherratt and I attended the annual meeting we impressed on the Association the fact that the whole of the money must be forthcoming; otherwise the Board could not go on with the asphalting. Cr. Z. O. Sherratt, who endorsed Cr. Davis’s remarks, outlined the decision at the Sports’ Association meeting.

After further discussion the Board decided that 12 men should be put on the work of breaking up the asphalt, commencing next Monday, and it was agreed that the surplus spoil should be used to build up the hollows in front and on either side of the pavilion. The clerk (Mr C. L. Kirby) was instructed to write that, as the condition of the track was such that it could not be sealed until it dried out. the Acting-Minister of Labour, Hon. P. C. Webb, be asked if he would be agreeable to deferring payment of the Department of Labour’s subsidy for the work until the track was in a fit state to commence sealing operations.
