Among the passenge-s by the Mataroa to Auckland from Southampton on Saturday was Mr S. G. Owen, a former Oxford Don and a grandson of the early New Zealand statesman, Henry Sewell, who led the first Ministry formed after the establishment of responsible government in 1856. Mr Owen, who is making a round trip on the Mataroa for health reasons, is nearly 79 years of age, and was bom in England only five years after his grandfather arived in New Zealand in 1853. to assume local charge of the affairs of the Canterbury Association. Before leaving England he was in touch with the High Commissioner’s Office in the hope that he might meet in New Zealand some old residents who had been friends or acquaintances of Sewell.
