COTTINGHAM FIRST HOME NOCTURNUS WINS THE BEAUFORT Special to “The Timaru Herald.'' CHRISTCHURCH, August 12. Bright sunshine favoured the second day of the Grand National meeting at Riccarton, and while an easterly breeze made the air a trifle keen it improved visibility, and conditions generally were excellent for racing. Nocturnus emphasised the merit of his Grand National win by an easy victory in the Beaufort Steeplechase, and promises to take high rank as a jumper. Cottingham, one of the two South Islanders in the Grand National Hurdles, went to the front early in the race, and thereafter was never actually headed, winning by a head after a great battle up the straight with Clarion Call.
