IMPORTED JERSEYS

HIGH PRICES REALISED By Telegraph Press Association AUCKLAND, August 10. Unusual interest was created to-day by the sale of 11 bulls which had been sent to the Dominion by Mr Wallace Macmonnies, who is regarded as the leading importer of Jerseys in North America. The twelve animals sent io New Zealand were quarantined for 60 days after arrival in the Dominion. Some of the leading breeders of the Dominion were among the large number who attended. The sale was an innovation in that the majority of the bulls were aged. Though guaranteed as breeders, the sale was a gamble more or less on account of the age of the bulls, but from the point of view of the auctioneers the results of the sale were regarded as satisfactory- One of the bulls was withdrawn from sale, and the average price obtained for the remaining 11 was 287 guineas.. Top price of 560 guineas was paid by a Waikato breeder, Mr W. S. McEwen, of Cambridge, for a three animal. Mr McEwens’ top price purchase, Susie’s Oxford Design, was junior champion at the national dairy show of America in 1935. The high price of 525 guineas was paid for the rising eight-year-old Sybil's Star Gamboge by Dr G. Walker, of Whangarei, who has one of the most outstanding herds in the Dominion. It is claimed that this bull is the most outstanding type of Jersej’ seen in the Dominion. It was grand champion of the National Dairy’ Show of America in 1934. The animal will be an acquisition to the already fine herd of Dr Walker. Another outstanding purchase was that of the three-year-old Noble’s Design by Mr T. Smith, of Otorohanga, who paid 400 guineas for the animal.

SOUTHERN CROSS GLASSWORKS A survey of the possibilities of markets in the South Island to keep the Southern Cross Glassworks Company at Ashburton going and an investigation into the causes of the closing of the works will be carried out by the Department of Industries and Commerce at the request of the Minister. The works have been lying idle for several years and there has been much dissatisfaction among the shareholders about the position. Several samples of containers made at the works were shown to the Minister by Mr Herring. M.P., who expressed surprise at the excellent quality of the glass. Mr Herring pointed out to the Minister that there was an unlimited quantity of silica sand at Mount Somers available for the works, and that its purity was comparable with any similar raw material in the world. He said that the South Island offered a market that would be handled with ease by the works.
