ARRIVING TO-DAY
VISIT OF THE SHIELD HOLDERS HERE TILL FRIDAY Members of the touring Southland team will arrive by the 4.34 express from the south this afternoon. They will be met at the station by officials of the South Canterbury Rugby Union and taken to, the Dominion Hotel, which will be their headquarters during the visit. To-night the visitors will be entertained at a picture theatre, and after the match to-morrow will be entertained at dinner and later will be guests at the Star Football Club’s annual ball. The team, which will remain in Timaru until Friday, will be entertained at the Savage Club’s korero on Thursday night. They will leave at 4.34 on Friday afternoon to catch the inter-island steamer express for Wellington, where they will arrive on Saturday to view the first test between New Zealand and South Africa. Leaving Wellington at 5.47 that night, they will reach Palmerston North at 9.25 p.m., and on August 16 will play Manawatu. Other engagements on the tour are: August 19, v. Hawke’s Bay, at Hastings; August 21, v. Wairarapa, at Carterton; August 25, v. Wellington; August 28, V. Canterbury, at Christchurch.
The personnel of the touring party is:— Forwards: C. George, J. Mattingly, V. L. George, R. H. Ward, N. R. Irwin, G. Graham, A. Scott, C. Soper, L. Naylor, W. Parker, J. Dunstan, S. Purdue. Backs: G. Thomas (captain), J. Purdue, J. Miles, A. G. Sutherland, R. Henderson, A. W. Wesney, T. Mackie, G. Baird, J. Ballantyne and P. Grace. The managers of the Southland team are Messrs N. R. Brown and W. A. H. Oliver.
