BOROUGH COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING COMMITTEE REPORTS The ordinary meeting of the Timaru Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell), Councillors W. G. Tweedy, W. H. Hall, H. J. Mathers, P. B. Foote. A. G. Foster, F. B. Hawkey, M. H. Richards and A. S. Kinsirtan. Electricity and Omnibus Committee The Electricity and Omnibus Committee reported as follows: ed that it a better return is not shown ed that if abetter return is not shown at the next meeting the trip be discontinued. New Omnibus. —Enquiry from Leyland Motors as to whether the Council would permit them to exhibit the completed bus at the Olympic Show in carnival week.—Recommended that permission be given to exhibit the bus on the understanding that they take all risks including fire and damage to the bus. The New Zealand Electric Supply Association wrote suggesting that the Council rejoin the Association and I pointing out what had been effected by it, was considered and it was recom- | mended that a reply be sent that the Council did not see its way at present to rejoin the Association but suggested that they should obtain a contribution from the Municipal Electric Supply Association towards the particular objects for which they had been working. The report was adopted. Finance Committee

The Finance' Committee reported as follows: — Fencing Club:—The Town Clerk reported that satisfactory arrangements I appeared to have been made between ' the Fencing Club and the Legion of Frontiersmen in regard to a room on ■ the ground floor of the old Council I Chambers, and it was resolved that the use of the front room be granted to the | Fencing Club during the pleasure of I the Council, but entirely at their own j risk, and subject to satisfactory ar- ! I rangements being made as regards I I lighting. I Insurance. —The question of whether i the Council should take out a public risk cover at a cost of £ll9 to £159 per annum was considered ar.d owing to the fact that only two or three minor accidents involving payment by the Council had occurred, there seemed little necessity to take out such an insurance ar.d it was resolved that the matter should be considered with next year's estimates of establishing a fund out of which to meet any possible claims of this nature. Tlie report was adopted. \ Works Committee Tlie Works Committee reported as I follows: - South End Ratepayers’ Association.— Report of borough engineer was considered and it was recommended that no action be taken in regard to the . corner of Coonor Road, and that the j tar sealing of Brown Street be re- }

ferred for consideration with next year’s estimates. West End Association. —Report of ' borough engineer was considered, and it was resolved that the matter of asphalting footpath in Onslow Street be referred for consideration with next year’s estimates. Purchase of rubbish vehicle.—Report >f borough engineer was considered ir.d it was recommended that the .ender of Brown Wood and Coy., for a teo truck at £9OB be accepted. Airport. —Question of purchase of and at airport was reconsidered and ! t was recommended that no action >e taken in the meantime. Layout of lirport and provision of sites for langars were considered, and the porough engineer was instructed to •eport thereon. Referring to the letter from the South End Association regarding improvement to the corner of Coonoor ind Otipua Roads, Cr. Kinsman said hat he thought the request was a. •easonable one. He did not believe n the policy that a dangerous comer should be left as it would make drivers more careful. He thought the Council should reconsider its decision. Cr. Hall said that at the present ;ime cars had to take the comer ilowly, and if it was improved it would pe more dangerous. Cr. Kinsman moved and Cr. Richards seconded that the improving of the corner be favourably considered with :iext year’s estimates, but the motion vas defeated. The report was adopted.
