PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH LADIES’ ASSOCIATION The Rev. W. J. Couling presided over a large attendance at the annual meeting of the Geraldine Presbyterian Ladles' Association. The annual report stated that the Association had had a satisfactory and encouraging year, the work having proceeded quietly under the control of Mrs A. L. Brenton. A pleasing feature was the realisation of the object for which the Association had been formed, the paying off of the debt on the Manse, and the members felt that they could now go forward with renewed energies to raise funds for a new church. Three successful functions had been held during the year. The Scottish banquet in July, a garden party in November, and a sale of work in April. A total of £152/11/5 had been raised, and with a credit balance of £ll4 12/- brought forward from the previous year, the total receipts amounted to £267/3/5. A credit balance of £74 11/4 was left after they had paid off 16 debentures of £lO each, given £lB to the caretaker's salary, and paid their working expenses. Since the inception of the Association in 1928, the total receipts amounted to £1427/2/7 and th'- net profit paid over to the Deacon’s Court in redemption of debt on the Manse and gener ’ expenses of the church, was £ll9l/2/5. The Association had lost two willing workers, through their removal to Ashburton, in Mrs Crulckshank and Miss M. Cruickshank and the best wishes of the Association went with them to their new home. Thanks were due to Mrs C. S. Davies for arranging for the flowers in the Church each Sunday, and also to the ladles for decorating the church for the harvest thanksgiving services. The produce had been sent to the Timaru orphanage and Mr C. W. McKenzie had kindly attended to the matter of transport for same. At the invitation of the Methodist Ladles’ Guild, members had attended a social afternoon, which had proved very enjoyable. The Association extended to the church treasurer (Mr E. J. Twigg), grateful thanks for his help and assistance with their financial matters, and also to Mr J. S. Lorimer, who had removed to Timaru, for all the help he had given the Associatlan at the various functions. The report closed with special thanks to the Rev. W. J. and Mrs Couldlng for their continued interest, the president (Mrs A. L. Brenton), for her work during the year, the Deacons’ Court, members of the Association, and the many others who had helped during the year. The secretary (Miss E. McLean), moved the adoption of th" report and balance-sheet, which was carried unanimously. The election of officers resulted.— Prr ident, Mrs S. C. Chisnail; secretary, Miss E. McLean; treasurer, Mrs

E. J. Twigg; convener decorative committee, Mrs C. S. Davies; convener sub-committee, Mrs A. L. Brenton. Mr Couling thanked the association for its good work during the year and expressed a hope that it would do even bigger things in future. They were all going forward in hope and confidence towards the building of the new church, and the work of the Deacons’ Association was a source of encouragement both to himself and to the Deacons’ Court. It was decided to change the day of the meeting to the third Wednesday in each month. Final arrangements were made for the tea and concert to be held in aid of the new church funds. A gift evening in honour of Miss Jean Caln, will be held in the Rangitata Soldiers’ Memorial Hall on Tuesday, August 17.

Procter’s, the Opticians, Christchurch, will be making their next professional visit to Geraldine, on Wednesday, 25th August, when they may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel. Appointments can now be made by ringing Mr Morris Williams, chemist, ’phone 61 ♦
