TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL

OLD STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION FIRST ANNUAL MEETING The first annual general meeting of the Timaru Technical High School Old Students’ Association was held on Tuesday evening, Mr J. H. Marsh presiding over a fair attendance of members. Annual Report The Association was formed in May 1936, at a re-union dinner, and a committee of 14—six country members, six town members and two staff representatives —was appointed. The committee’s first work was the drawing up of a constitution for the Association, and this was adopted by a general meeting held on October 20, 1936. This provided, among other things, for an increase in the number of town representatives on the committee, and the country representatives are not now obliged to attend all meetings of the committee. The end of the Association’s financial year was fixed for June 30 each year. At a meeting of the committee on April 27 it was resolved that all subscriptions received after that date be carried forward to the year ending June 30 1938, in order that new members joining on leaving school would not have to pay two subscriptions in one year. Ninety-four subscriptions were paid for the year just ended, and of the subscriptions paid in advance five are for new members, making a total membership to date of 99. A ball was held early in August, and the committee’s efforts were well rewarded by the large and enthusiastic attendance of ex-pupils and friends. It was decided to make the dinner an annual function, and it was held this year on May 29. Mr J. G. Johnston left the school in September to take up a position on the West Coast, and the Association, in conjunction with the staff and members of the Board of Managers, held a farewell social at the School, when a presentation was made on behalf of the ex-pupils.

The Board of Managers of the School granted the Association the use of the school tennis courts, thus enabling an Old Students’ Tennis Club to be formed, for members of the Association and friends. An endeavour has also been made to form a Glee Club. The Association has adopted a plain maroon blazer, with pocket badge and embossed buttons, and a number have already been supplied to members. The accounts disclose an excess of income over expenditure of £3/6/0. Unfortunately some of the social functions resulted in slight losses, but this is only to be expected in a new Association, and it is anticipated that in future these functions will meet with more support from all ex-pupils of the School. We have to express our gratitude to the Principal of the School and to the Board of Managers for the use of the School for meetings, and for their keen interest in the affairs of the Association. Thanks are also due to Miss M. Spencer for her services as auditor. Election of Officers The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patron: The Principal of the School (Mr F. L. N. Tuck); vice-patrons, Messrs G. Benstead, P. C. Vinnell, P. R. Talbot, A. Stead and J. G. Johnston; president, Mr J. H. Marsh; vicepresident, Mr J. O’Connell; secretary and treasurer, Miss B. Burrow; town committee, Misses W. Daniels, E. Ivey, M. Marsden and M. Stapleton, Messrs B. Cox, J. Price and W. Cague; country representatives, Mrs S. Bishop (Tycho), Misses N. Findlay (Temuka), and M. Coles (St. Andrews); Messrs O. Davey (St. Andrews), A. Smith (Albury) and S. Preddy (Temuka). Miss M. Spencer was re-elected auditor. A letter was received from the Ashburton Technical Old Pupils’ Association suggesting that as the respective schools held annual basketball and football matches, the Old Pupils’ Associations should do the same, and inviting the Association to send up a basketball and a football team. The suggestion was approved, and the matter was referred to the committee to make arrangements for a trip to Ashburton on September 11.
