Rumours at Portland Bill that during anti-submarine exercises, a depth charge from the destroyer Wolfhound brought up a German submarine, whose commander was interrogated and allowed to proceed, elicited an explanation that it was a British submarine co-operating in manoeuvres. The fact that the German submarine U 27 was passing east simultaneously gave rise to the story.
