IN BAD ORDER
STRATHALLAN STREET CROSSING
NEED FOR IMMEDIATE IMPROVEMENT
The urgent need for improvement of the Strathallan Street crossing was emphasised at a meeting of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last night. The matter was introduced in the report of the Transport Committee, which contained the following:—"Your committee wishes to draw the attention of the Chamber to the unsatisfactory condition of the roadway at Strathallan Street crossing, and recommends that the Chamber makes overtures to the Railways Department for permanent improvements to be put in hand as temporary measures are unavailing on account of the tremendous amount of heavy traffic over the intersection.”
Mr G. H. Andrews said that there was no doubt that the crossing was in a deplorable state. The position had been investigated, and it had been ascertained that the crossing was under the control of the Railways Department. When pedestrians went over the crossing in wet weather they usually got their clothes splashed with mud, and owners of lorries also had reason for complaint concerning damage to their machines.
Mr W. I. Tait (chairman of the Transport Committee) said that the matter was brought under the notice of the Department some time ago, and some improvement had been effected. The road to-day, however, was in a very bad state, and as Mr Andrews had said, lorry owners had some cause for complaint. It was time the position was remedied and the Chamber should press in this direction. The president (Mr W. M. Sexton) suggested that they should seek the support of the Borough Council and the Harbour Board. Mr Tait said that this could be done, and the Master Carriers’ Association might also be brought in. A motion to this effect was carried, and it was also decided to seek the co-operation of the Member for Timaru, the Rev. Clyde Carr.
