INVITATION DECLINED
BASKETBALLERS DISAPPOINTED It is not always easy to decline an invitation from the ladies to spend a pleasant afternoon with them with a cup of tea in the bargain. But the Borough Councillors did it on Tuesday evening, when an invitation was received from the Basketball Sub-Associ-ation to field a team of nine against a team of basketball girls. "We would be glad if your players could come in costum? and add to the attraction of the game," stated the Sub-Association’s letetr. It was proposed that the game take place on Saturday next and be played in tenminute spells. There was an expectant hush when the letter was read, but the bachelor councillor did not relieve the suspense and solve the obvious dilemma. “What’s the rule regarding replacement," ventured Cr. G. K. Watters. "I thought pugilistic contests went by three-minute spells, not 10-minute,” said Cr. W. G. Paul. "Oh, they are not allowed to touch anyone,” replied Cr. Watters. “I think we should reply that if we were to accept the invitation we should certainly come in costume,” said the Mayor. After further discussion it was agreed that a diplomatic reply would be that owing to the shortness of notice the councillors had not time to get fit. SOCIAL EVENINGS The Waihao Downs Women’s Institute held a most enjoyable euchre and dance in the Waihao Downs School recently. In spite of very wintry weather there was a good attendance.
