GOLF PF OPHET
J. H. TAYLOR S GOOD PICKING J. H. Taylor, former British open champion advised Henry Cotton and his brother Leslie in 1923 to take up golf as a profession!. Here is the letter (dated Aug. 7, 1923) “JU.” sent to Mr G. Cotton after playing a trial round with his two boys:— "Dear Sir,—We have finished a very pleasant game, and I will lose no time in recording my impressions of the boys’ play. With the hard ground and the hot sun the conditions for good golf
were all against the player, and as MidSurrey is essentially a pitching course, the difficulties are accentuated. In spite of this, the boys played quite well. “As they appear to me they are of two different types. Leslie is of the robust, hard-hitting type, whereas Henry is more methodical and careful, and, I should Judge, more inclined to know 'the reason of the cause,’ end ‘the wherefore of the why.” "Both are gifted with -ae golfing sense, and I have no uoubt that if they work at it for th? next two or three years a steady, calculating game should be the result. Both boys will do well. Henry will concentrate and go far.
“To arrive at a good stage in the game requires thought and concentration; it cannot be attained on the hit-or-miss theory, and I would impress upon them that they try to eradicate their faults by sheer application. By so doing they will build for themselves a sure foundation. Faithfully yours.— J. H. TAYLOR.”
