SURPRISE CONCERT

THEATRE ROYAL. TO-MORROW NIGHT The Timaru Municipal Band, under the direction of Lieut. R. J. Simpson, will present an excellent concert in the Theatre Royal to-morrow night at 8.15 p.m. The programme, which will be a varied one, will include classical, popular, and novelty items, and should appeal to all tastes. The concert will be preceded with a brilliant fanfare of trumpeting. Tire opening scene “Jolly Coppersmith ’ is a lively march, followed by the hymn "Nearer My God To Thee," under special lighting arrangements. Next comes the ever popular musical selection “Rase Marie." Mr Harry Francis of Christchurch, who has been specially engaged will sing "I Heard You Singing.” The band’s next items will be “Sizllietta,” an echo serenade, featured by Bandsman R. Milligan, and a descriptive intermezzo “From a Russian Village,” the opening bars of which will at once capture the interest of the listener by the almost barbaric rhythm of the Cossack March, and then by the characteristically Russian Chorale, followed by “Song of the Volga Boatman.” Succeeding these is a melodious mazurka under the title of “The Peanant Girls’ Dance.” The violin solo “Siciliano and Rigandon'’ (Kriesler) will be featured by Mr Inglis Todd, L.R.S.M., L.T.C.L. "Classical Masterpieces" by the Band will be a feature in the programme; the number will include the following classics: "Toreador Song”—Carmen, "Spring Song” (Mendelssohn), “Prelude” op. 3.
