PLANS FOR REUNION Plans to make the annual reunion of the Temuka Returned Soldiers’ Association a memorable occasion have been taken in hand by the social committee of the association, which proposes to invite to the function foundation members of the body. The Temuka Association is considered to have been the first branch formed in South Canterbury. Established in the form of a committee in 1916, the year of the foundation of the New Zealand Association, the local branch operated a few months before the South Canterbury branch was formed. After that Temuka formed a sub-committee of South Canterbury until the establishment of the present association. Still resdient in the Temuka district are the original chairman (Mr W. Oldfield) and several members of his committee. To them and others now residing in other parts special invitations have been sent and they will be the guests of honour at the reunion. Mr T. H. Cunnard, the first treasurer, now lives in Christchurch and Messrs A. Gason and L. Henderson, committee members, reside at Hawarden and St. Andrews respectively. The first secretary, Mr W. McGlllen and Messrs L. Trumper and L. H. Benbow are still Temuka residents. Mr W. Moore, another committee member, died some years ago. A matter of particular interest is the fact that Mr Oldfield has continuously served on the committee of the association since 1916 and he will be a specially honoured guest. The social committee has planned an interesting programme and at a meeting on Thursday evening decided to invite Mr C. Hansen and party, from Ashburton, to attend to assist with the entertainment. Special invitations are being sent to all returned men known to be residing in the Temuka district. “FRIENDLY FRIDAYS” TEAM POSITIONS UNCHANGED The positions of the teams remained unchanged after the completion of the eleventh round of the Friendly Fridays competition but by virtue of a substantial win over Hibernians, Druids reduced Citizens’ lead to 17 points. Joan Crawford, in the title role of this historical romance, from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, portrays the lovely daughter of a Washington tavern-keeper during the administration of President Andrew Jackson. Jackson himself, shielded her from the savage attacks of Washington society. John Eaton, Secretary of War, eventually married her, but her first love was for “Bow" Timberlake, the gay young naval officer who married her and sailed away to be killed. John Randolph of Virginia loved her from childhood but lost her. A newspaper man was her friend and loyal aide. President Jackson is impersonated by Lionel Barrymore, the veteran star whose engaging personality has captured millions through the years of his brilliant career. Robert Taylor, Hollywood’s most spectacular young star of the current era, plays the part of Timberlake, the dashing seaman who made swift love to Peggy O'Neal and swept her off her feet.
