large cattle entry For several sales now the St. Andrews saleyards have been taxed to the utmost in order to accommodate the very large cattle yardings. At yesterday's sale an offering of 150 head of all classes was placed before butchers. The sale was a good one. practically every pen changing hands. The dairy cattle sale was an excellent one, the demands not being satisfied. The pig sale was a slight improvement on late markets. The sheep entry was the smallest for some time. Sales were:—

The annual accounts of the New Zealand Farmers’ Fertiliser for the year ended May 31 show net profits at £21,160, the highest since 1930. SOUTH OTAGO FREEZING COMPANY Killing operations for the season ceased at the South Otago Freezing Company's works last Saturday. The total number of sheep and lambs put through the works was 251,774, a decrease of 30,038 compared with last year. The cattle killed numbered 3729, a decrease of 123 compared with last season; and 737 pigs, a decrease of 219 on the number last year. These figures represent the killings for export only. WAR LOAN. According to the Department of Mines at Johannesburg, £29,000,000 worth of stores equipment was bought by South African Mines in 1936. A great variety of commodities is included in the returns. Ordinary and electrical plant was responsible for £3,000,000, and mining machinery proper for £1,750,000, of which the Witwatersrand took two-thirds. Nearly £2,000,000 w'orth of electrical equipment was used on the mines notwithstanding the large number of power stations which are supplying electricity to the mines. Steel, mostly produced in the Union, has become one of the most important items of expenditure of the mines. More than £200,000 of iron bars and corrugated iron were used last year, while drill steel represented £364,000, structural steel £264,000. sheet steel £228,000. and angle bars £627,242. A total of 2421 rock drills were bought in 1936, costing £125,000, and £574.000 was spent in spares. Wire ropes came to £420,000.
