BACK-COUNTRY ROADS MAINTENANCE WORK In his report to be presented to the monthly meeting of the Mackenzie County Council to-day, the engineer (Mr D. Jeune) states that up-country frosts made the ice conditions very severe. The small culvert crossings had been frozen over, and even some of the larger rivers such as the Claycliffe had been practically impassable on account of the accumulation of ice. To deal satisfactorily with the difficulty, it would be necessary to station men on the spot permanently. As that was not possible, the problems had been treated as opportunity allowed.

The report details general maintenance work done during the month. The crusher unit has been operating in the Albury riding, and in 12 working days 1100 yards of metal was placed on the roads. An application had been received to do two of the small minor roads off the Cave-Pareora highway in the Levels County. FROSTS RESUME Heavy frosts were again recorded throughout the Mackenzie County yesterday morning, and were followed by bright sunshine. With continued fine weather, the heavy recordings earlier hr the week might be equalled, as the thaw was too brief to do very much good. ALLANDALE EUCHRE PARTY Prizes were won at the fortnightly euchre party and dance conducted by the Allandale School Committee, as follows:—Miss Dorothy Wareing 1, Mrs R. Wareing 2; Mr J. Cameron 1, Mr H. Parker 2. In spite of unsatisfactory weather there was a good attendance. Dance music was supplied by Mesdames W. Allan, R. Wareing and Miss P. Cameron (piano) and Messrs J. Cameron and J. Cartwright (violin). Mr J. J. O’Connor was master of ceremonies. BAND FUND Donations made to the fund opened by the Mackenzie County Council to assist the Highland Pipe Band to attend the contest in Palmerston North are :—Fairlie Cycle and Athletic Club £l/1/-, J. Hay 10/-, R. Major 5/-. An additional donation of £lO has been made to the King George V Memorial Fund by Miss L. B. Wills.
