WRESTLING

AMATEURS HOLD TOURNAMENT HIGH STANDARD The great strides which have been made in amateur wrestling in South Canterbury were demonstrated last night when a number of Timaru enthusiasts staged a tournament in “Tiger” Mills’s gymnasium in Latter Street. In all, seven bouts were arranged, and in every case an exceptionally high standard of good, solid wrestling was maintained. All of the bouts were interesting, the contestants being well matched, those in which falls were registered going to the third round. At the conclusion of the tournament the trophies, of which there was one for each bout, were presented by Mr A. Cameron, of Temuka, a special award for the most improved wrestler going to G. Dwan. Messrs R. Strang and P. Stevens acted as referees. Results were:— D. Faith (9.3) beat J. Roundhill (9.3) by a fall in the third round. N. Malloch (9.11) beat F. Sloan (10.3) on points. J. Gilmore (13.1) beat R. Walton (11.6) on points. A. Keen .(11.7) beat C. Clark (11.4) by a fall in the third round. R. Strang (9.7) beat G. Dwan (10.11) by a fall in the third round. M. Cameron (12.7) beat G. Clark (11.11) by a fall in the third round. R. Depree (11.7) beat R. Opie (11.12) on points. LITTLE WOLF LOSES ON POINTS By Tpipsranh- Pre<;« Association CHRISTCHURCH, June 30. Chief Little Wolf, a Navajo Indian from Colorado, made his first appearance in a New Zealand wrestling ring here to-night, losing to Sammy Stein on points after each had gained one fall. Little Wolf entered the ring draped in a brightly coloured striped shawl and gaudy Indian head dress. Short and broad, he measures approximately two feet across thi back, and in to-night’s bout was an easy target for Stein’s flying tackles. The first six rounds were evenly fought. In the seventh Stein struck the Indian with four flying tackles in rapid succession and pinned him to a fall w'ith a body press. The Indian gained a submission fall from a deathlock soon after the last round opened. Stein was given the decision on points, Little Wolf leaving the ring protesting.
