WELLINGTON R.C.

ACCEPTANCES By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, June 30. Acceptances for the first day of the Wellington Racing Clubs winter meeting on Tuesday next are:— 11.30 a.m. MARIRI STEEPLECHASE,

To see Pamelus, a miler pure and simple, top-weight in the Melbourne Cup is a revelation of the poor class of stayers in Australia just now. Golden Promise, who shares the top line with the Queenslander, is another whose qualifications for a two-miler are doubtful. The situation recalls the case of the New Zealand Cup three or four years ago when Autopay was topweight, with another non-stayer in Inflation next on the list.

Riding engagements have been made for the Oamaru meeting on Saturday as follows: A. E. Ellis, Silver Streak, Queen Dorothy and Salient Knight; L. J. Ellis, Nolana, Forum and Araboa; E. J. Jennings, Acena; J. W. Jennings, Scrap and Prince Flaneur; C. T. Wilson, Hanlon, Mount Vai, Peacock and Double Shot; R. Beale, Black Duke; H. Turner, Polydora; A. G. Parsons, Palmyra; A. Messervy, Daring Deed, Merry del Vai, Carfex and Gold Boy. H. W. Hibberd, Sir Hugh and Volo Dale.

The future of the Opotiki Jockey Club was fully discussed at a meeting at which the president outlined the club’s intentions. Two years ago the club’s financial position made it impossible to race on their home course, and permision was granted to race at Tauranga to build up the funds, this being done to the extent of £llOO. It was then intended to race at home, but word was received by the Domain Board that the Government had taken over the course for an aerodrome, and it was again decided to race at Tauranga. The New Zealand Racing Conference has now asked what steps are being taken by the club to obtain a course, as they had no intention to grant further permission to race away from home, and the club must find its own track or amalgamate with the Bay of Plenty Racing Club not later than June 30 of this year, otherwise they will lose the permit. The committee recently inspected three sites, one at Tablelands, which was the most favpurable as an all-weather course, though the owners were not altogether favourable to a lease. It was proposed that all present at the meeting sign their names to a letter to the owners asking them to consider a proposal that the club take a lease of a portion of their property for one day a year, the owners having full control of the property for training purposes. This was carried unanimously.
