PLEASANT POINT

MEETING OF TOWN BOARD

HALL CHARGES INCREASED A deputation from the Women’s Institute headed by the president, Mrs Liston, waited on the Town Board in connection with the increased hall charges. Mrs Liston said that her organisation was very surprised at the board increasing the rental. It had always assisted any worthy object in the district and if members persisted in the increased charge, the Institute would have to make other arrangements. Mrs Raymond said that the Institute was the Town Board’s second best client and the organisation would be extremely grateful if members could agree to let it have the use of the hall at the old rental. Mrs Cunningham and Miss Kime referred to the fact that the branches finances were only sufficient to pay its way after the Federation expenses were met together with the cost of running each year’s activities. Mr Roberts said that ever since the hall was built it had been a losing proposition. People in the township did not perhaps realise that each year there was a deficit on the hall of approximately £lOO. This had to be met out of revenue and the board realising this, had to make some alteration in the charges to counteract the yearly loss.

Mr Maze made reference to the arrangements made with the Women’s Institute when it was first formed and said that satisfaction was apparent then, but owing as Mr Roberts had intimated, to the loss on the hall each year they had found it imperative to revise the charges. On the deputation retiring the Board by unanimous resolution decided that the increased charges should remain and expressed the opinion that only by adherence to them could they hope to give satisfaction to the ratepayers. Those present were Messrs M. F. Maze (chairman), E. Halstead, W. C. Grant, T. Kelliher, A. Davison, A. H. Roberts, H. F. Christie. Correspondence was received from the South Canterbury Hospital Board acquainting the Board of the increased levy. Messrs Roberts and Christie said that objections had often been raised as to the amount levied against the local board. Citizens always had to foot the bill without obtaining any benefits in return. Mr J. Smith wrote that he was experiencing trouble with the Board’s horses on his property, and asked it to recondition the fence. It was agreed to have the work attended to Immediately. Mr Maze, referring to the Returned Soldiers’ Re-union, said that he had been an Invited guest to receive an illuminated address presented by the Dominion Executive to all local bodies for the sympathy and help given to returned soldiers. He had accepted the address on behalf of the Board and in doing so he had commended the local branch on the excellence of its reunion. People should always endeavour to support this wonderful organisation, comprised of men who had risked .their, lives in the war, and he thought that as a small token of esteem the Board should consider allowing 'he branch free use of the Town Hall for its annual function. This was unanimously agreed to, all members speaking in appreciative terms of the wonderful efforts of all returned men to carry on as citizens after the rigours of a disastrous war.

Mr Gordon Gliddon made application for crossing repairs at his service station. The clerk wa- instructed to reply that the board could accept no responsibility in this direction. Regarding a request for a culvert in Cabul Street, the works committee reported that the job would really be an expensive one as it was necessary to have concrete pipes put in. Several members made suggestions about grading this particular crossing and it was resolved to obtain estimates for the work. A letter was received from the Highways Board wit reference to the tar sealing of two secondary highways >n the township. It was resolved that owing to the amount of finance available the Highways Board be notified that the work suggested could not be undertaken in the meantime. Mr Grant brought up the question of the removal of garbage from ratepayers premises, and he was deputed to make inquiries and report to the next meeting. The clerk was granted an increase in salary of £lO. Owing to the vast amount of work dope by the chairman it was unanimously decided t” grant him an annual honorarium of £5/5/-. Notice of motion was tabled that the rate be the same as last year, namely

7 7d general rate and Id hall rate on capital value. The rateable value of the township has been reduced by approximately £3OOO. Sitting as a Domain Board it was resolved to have an inspection of the Domain in the near future relative to some minor repairs and improvements. RIFLE CLUB The ninth official shoot of the Pleasant Point Miniature Rifle Club took place on Tuesday evening. The gold bullet for the highest score off the rifle was won by R. Blakemore with 79.
