SURPRISE IN WOMEN’S SINGLES AMERICAN TITLE HOLDER BEATEN
United Press Association—By Eiceirto Telegraph Cnpvrlgm LONDON, June 29. The chief interest to-day at Wimbledon in the play in the All-England tennis tournament, centred around Madame Mathieu, who it would not be unchivalrous to call a veteran, who created one of the few sensations of the tournament by beating the volatile, Senorita Lizana, who had been tipped as a finalist. Mme. Mathieu’s super steadiness and scientific play was always too good for the Chilean, who fought hard. Mlle Jedrzejowska’s terrific forehand accuracy enabled her to gain a runaway victory over Miss Scriven. Miss Marble was behind 1-3 in the final set, against Frau Sperling, and won the match chiefly by storming the net and volleying and drop shotting. Miss Round whose recent ment is shown by her easy defeat of Countess De La Valdene yesterday, played the game of her life to-day, beating the title holder Miss Jacobs. The Englishwoman showed general superiority, and returned even the Jacobs famous chop-shot, with ease. She won many points by raiding the net and killing Miss Jacobs’ returns. It was a surprise victory. Results were:— Women’s Singles Quarter-finals Mlle J. Jedrzejowski (Poland) heat Miss M. C. Scriven (England), 6-1, 6-2.
