WITH TWO ROUNDS PLAYED

POSITION OF TIMARU MEMBERS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP With two of the three qualifying rounds for the Timaru Club chamionshlp played, the following are the leaders in the three grades to date:—

RYDER CUP BRITAIN V. UNITED STATES Onlted Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—noovrlßht LONDON, June 20. A howling south-west wind and a baked course made conditions difficult on the Southport course for the Ryder Cup golf match Tremendous galleries followed each match. Results were: Whitcombe and D. J. Rees (Britain) halved with Gene Sarazen and Densmore Shute (U.S.A.). Percy Alliss and J. Burton (Britain) beat H. Picard and J. Revolta (U.S.A.), two up and one to play. R. Guldahl and Tony Manero (U.S A.) beat A. J. Lacey and R. Cox (Britain), two up and one to play. Dudley and Wilson (U.S.A.) beat A. H. Padgham and T. H. Cotton (Britain), four up and two to play. A. .1 Murray in Form: J. Murray, the well-known Auckland professional who won the New Zealand open and professional championships in 1935, was in brilliant form. Playing at the Glendowie links he was responsible for the lowest score yet recorded there. The course, which measures 5570 yards, has a scratch score of 72 and Murray returned a 63 Details of his card are as follows: Out: 53343433 4—32 In: 4 3 3 3 4 4 3 3 4—31 Murray's score was the result oi remarkably accurate iron play, particularly coming home when, on a num

ber of occasions, his second shots finished within two feet of the pin. Later Murray was again out in 32 and he covered the last nine in even fours. The fact that the "clean and place” rule was in force in no way detracts from the merit of Murray's performance. It was certainly a wonderful exhibition of golf and as he has had no regular play this year he should be in fine form for the national meeting in three months’ time. • ♦ * • Won Title Three Times: The winning of titles three times on end seems to be coming quite a fashion In Queensland. Norman von Nida set the fashion only a month ago by winning, for the third time, the Queensland “Open." Now the Gardiners, Mrs W F.. and daughter Janet, have won the Queensland Ladies Foursomes championship for the third time. • • • • Date Extended: Owing to the Walmate match last week-end the date for the completion of the first round of the Knock-Out fourball at Hlghfield has been extended until July 11.
