VEGETABLE GARDEN
Lift rhubarb which is required for forcing and leave the roots exposed to the weather for a week or two. After forcing they are not worth saving so small pieces should be planted to replace those which iiave been lifted. Rhubard may be forced in the open by placing casks over the crowns. Cabbage, cauliflower and other seeds may be sown in gentle heat in the hot-bed. When germination takes place see that they get ample ventilation whenever the weather is suitable, to avoid damping off. Complete the pruning of fruit trees afterwards gathering and burning all pruning* to prevent the spread of disease. When trees have been neglected shorten back leaders, cut out spindly growths, and prune strong-growing laterals lightly. If the latter are pruned hard back the only result will be the production of strong woody growth.
