NO HOLIDAY FOR WINTER SHOW DECISION OF RETAILERS’ MEETING A decision not to close for the day to-morrow, the occasion of the district excursion to the South Canterbury Winter Show, was made by a meeting of 28 retailers in the course of a discussion on local topics on Monday evening. The discussion regarding the holiday was taken in committee, and although the schools will be taking part in the excursion, as well as many country people, those present decided not to close. The arrangements for the excursion have been completed, the organisers stated yesterday. Special fares have been arranged, and these will cover admission to the Show as well as payment for the railway trip, but unless excursionists hold the special train tickets they will not be admitted without payment of the usual charges. Ticket sellers are to be at the station at 9.30 and the train will leave at 10.5 a.m. UNLICENSED CARS DRIVERS BEFORE COURT Drivers of motor vehicles who were detected operating cars without the new year’s number plates attached appeared at the fortnightly sitting of the Temuka Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Messrs H. E. Gapper and E. Blackmore, Justices of the Peace. Jesse Colin South (Mr F. A. Joynt), who told the traffic inspector that he had not relicensed his car because it had been sold and was awaiting delivery to the new owner, was fined 10/- with costs 12/-, and other fines inflicted were: Canterbury Farmers’ Co-op. 10/-, with costs 10/-; Keith Topham 10/-, with 12/- costs; and James William Pankhurst 10/-, with costs 3/-. On charges of driving a car while not being the holder of a driver’s license, and of operating a car insufficiently lighted, James Maguire appeared. He had had one headlamp out and no tail-light on his car, and fines of 10/- with costs 3/- on each charge were imposed. Martin Greelish, who had been convicted of riding a bicycle without a light in January last, appeared on a similar charge. He was fined 10/-, with costs 3/-.
