On the Stock Exchange banking shares, assisted by the National Bank's disclosure of increased profits, were somewhat firmer. Moving picture interests were better and Anthony Horderns advanced a shade. Tooths were traded in actively being marked down on an ex-dividend basis.

Melbouren Exchange. The market was quiet awaiting a definite lead from overseas. Bonds continue the strongest section. Sales:—

A PROFIT OF £80,005 A net profit of £80,005/19/- was made by McKenizes Department Stores, Ltd., in the year ended March 31, 1937, which, together with balance brought forward from 1936, gives a total of £126,037/7/8 available for distribution. The directors’ report recommends a dividend of 174 per cent on the paid-up capital, which at present stands at £400,000. This dividend, which will be payable on June 8, will absorb £70,000, leaving £56,037/7/8 to carry forward to the next trading period. The company now operates 26 stores throughout New Zealand. Of these, five stores have been opened during the year under review, and the full benefit of the trading of these new stores should be reflected in next year’s accounts.
