CONDITIONS IN TIMARU Remnants of Wednesday evening’s southerly storm were noticeable in the weather yesterday which was cloudy and cold. The sun shone at infrequent intervals for a total of nearly four hours. Records at Timaru Park yesterday were:— Barometer at 9 a.m.—29.53. Max. temp. —54.6. Max. temp, on grass—2B. Frost—4 degrees. Wind—S.2 at 5 p.m. Rainfall to 8 p.m.—,23ins. Rainfall to date this year—9.6 Bins. Rainfall to date last year—ls.s7ins. Sunshine—3.B hours. Sunshine to date this year—66o.97 hours. IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch: The weather yesterday was fine with sunshine and passing clouds. A moderate to strong southwest wind was blowing. The maximum temperature was 52.3 degrees. The barometer was rising and registered 29.79 in at 5 p.m. Ashburton.—Preceded by a display of lightning which lasted over a long period and was one of the most brilliant and startling seen for a long time, a southerly swept over Ashburton on Wednesday evening. The full effects of the storm were not felt in the town, but conditions were unpleasant for over an hour while it lasted. There was a short but heavy fall of rain, 20 points being recorded, and some sleet also fell. The wind blew violently for a time. A frost followed the storm, 4.8 degrees being recorded after which yesterday was fine and sunny. Geraldine: Air temperatures, min. 37, max. 68, at 9 a.m. 49. . Bright sunshine early, becaming overcast and cold; keen south-westerly wind. Temuka: After a heavy thunderstorm on Wednesday night. 17 points of rain was registered yesterday morning. The day was dull and cold with feeble sunshine towards 4 p.m. The maximum temperature was 51 degrees and the minimum 28. Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday)—Thermometer, maximum 58.2, minimum 40.0; frost, 2 degrees; rain. 10 points; bright sunshine, 5 hours 30 minutes; wind gauge, miles run in last 24 hours, 137. A storm broke about 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and the wind blew with gale force for the greater part of the night. Yesterday was fine, but a chilly wind was in evidence. A sprinkling of snow was visible on the Hunter Hills yesterday morning'. Dunedin: A cold fresh south-west wind again prevailed yesterday. The sky was overcast and threatening. Temperatures were cold but the barometer continued to rise, the reading in the afternoon being 29.78 in. CANTERBURY FORECAST Winds—Moderate to strong southwesterly, decreasing and later becoming variable. Weather—Fine; temperatures milder. Seas —Moderate to rather rough, but decreasing.
