PLEASANT POINT
FARM SCHOOL MEETING OF COMMITTEE The distribution and nutritive value of subterranean clover was one of the main topics of discussion at a meeting of the Farm School Committee. Present —Messrs A. H. Roberts (chairman), C. Lyons, R. Kingston, F. W. Agnew, M. Maze, T. Kelliher, C. W. Chapman, J. Chapman, S. C. Gibb, W. Halkett, A. K. Easterbrook (secretary). Experiments have been conducted at the farm for some time with subterranean clover and a lot of data is being compiled which the committee hopes to have available for the information of farmers generally. The chairman reported that the oat crop had been disposed of at a satisfactory figure. Mr J. Chapman, visitor for the previous month, said that the farm was in good order. He had ordered 18 tons of lime and 2 tons of superphosphate for topdressing the clover area. The holly hedge on the front boundary fence was doing particularly well. Tire thistle menace was fully discussed and various opinions were advanced as to the best methods to eradicate it. One member remarked that if the farmers of South Canterbury were not careful the thistle menace would assume very grave proportions. The secretary was Instructed to communicate with Mr W. H. Orbell asking for a suitable date for a demonstration. Mr Agnew reported that he had sold the oat straw at a satisfactory figure. BOWLING CLUB The executive of the Pleasant Point Bowling Club met on Wednesday evening. Present—Mr H. L. Christie ((in the chair), Mesdames Taylor, Cunningham, Arnott, Miss Macßean, Messrs Grant and Malcolmson. It was decided to accept the Government subsidy under the No. 13 scheme and begin on the work of cleaning up the bowling green section as soon as the land was available. It was reported that the land had been surveyed and the plans deposited with the Deeds Department. The land is at present in a rough state, a portion of it being covered with bricks and broken concrete. It was decided that the rubbish be carted to the school playground where it will be used in levelling the football ground. Mrs Taylor and Mr Christie were deputed to meet the library committee and endeavour to come to some arrangement about the site of the old library. It was considered by members that if this could be obtained it would add considerably to the appearance of the town and the attractiveness of the bowling green. It is necessary for the Bowling Club to have some funds at its disposal before any work can be commenced, and the secretary was instructed to ask the General Carnival Committee for a grant.
