WOMENS INSTITUTES

TEMUKA A comprehensive report of the annual meeting of the federation of the South Canterbury Women’s Institute which was held at Geraldine was given at the monthly meeting of the Temuka Women’s Institute by Mrs J. C. Hayhurst. Mrs R. A. Taylor presided. It was agreed to plant a tree on the Main Highway to commemorate the coronation. Mrs V. Brookland gave a demonstration on making cane trays. On behalf of the institute Mrs A. S. Mclnnes presented Mrs T. K Shiels who is leaving the district with a posy. The monthly competitions resulted.— Baby’s singlet: Mrs Rainey 1, Mrs A. S. Mclnnes 2, Mrs V. Brookland 3. Bottle of fruit: Mrs Rainey 1. Mrs H. Wilson 2. Cheese savouries: Mrs Rainey 1, Mrs Mclnnes 2, Mrs Wilson 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Fraser, Mosley, Wade, Surridge and Miss Twoomey. GLENITI At the May meeting of the Gleniti Women's Institute Mrs Finlay presided over a fair attendance of members and extended a welcome to a number of visitors. Miss Hazel Rawson was welcomed as a new member. Mrs Finlay gave a very interesting report on the Federation meeting held at Geraldine. The “golden thread’’ was taken by Mrs W. Browne who spoke on “Helen Keller.” After the business had been attended to the president introduced Miss Boal who gave a demonstration of making a loose cover for an easy chair. This was followed by Mr C. T. Ballantyne giving a short display of the latest sewing machine. On behalf of the Institute Mrs McAlister sincerely thanked the two demonstrators.

Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames ArraS, Caskey, Robinson, Misses Berry and Arras.

The competitions resulted as follows. —Article from cardboard box: Mrs Browne and Mrs D. Ramsay equal 1, Mrs Robinson and Mrs Black equal 2, Miss Arras and Mrs Winnington equal 3. Coffee sandwich (iced and filled) : Mrs Macpherson and Mrs Tait equal 1, Mrs Caskey and Miss Pearse equal 2, Mrs Cain 3. Bowl of chrysanthemums: Mrs Pringle 1, Mrs Morse and Macpherson equal 2, Mrs D. Ramsay 3. Specimen bloom: Mrs Pringle 1, Miss Pearse and Mrs Pearse equal 2, Mrs Macpherson 3.
