BRITISH PROTESTS
ITALIAN TREATMENT OF MISSIONARIES United Pres# Association—By Electric Tehgraph—Copyrteht (Received April 12, 7.10 p.m.) ROME, April 11. The British Ambassador (Sir Eric Drummond) visited Count Gdeazzo Ciano (Minister of Foreign Affairs) and formally protested against the expulsion of British missionaries from Abyssinia, and Signor Gayda’s allegations against the missionaries’ moral character and activities, and also against the fantastic Italian articles regarding Waziristan.
Count Ciano replied that he might later furnish particulars of the incidents.
Mr William Phillips (United States Ambassador) protested against the expulsion of the American women missionaries.
Following the expulsion of six British missionaries from Abyssinia, Dr Gayda in “Giornale d’ltalia,” writing on the subject, foreshadowed the banishment of all but Roman Catholic missionaries from the country. He accused the Protestant missionaries of espionage, adding: “All will be revealed as spies or agents in the shady business.”
