TREATMENT OF HAIR
SCIENCE AND HYGIENE Do you possess a hair brush? Or do you consider it a relic of the “good old days?” Nearly every dressing table has a fancy-backed brush, prominently displayed, but usually it is an adornment only ,and is not for use. Hair brushing not only invigorates the scalp, but its real object is to remove the dirt and dust which may have collected along the hair shaft. Therefore, as your hair brush has daily work to do, the main thing is to see that it is kept clean. Many women are grossly careless over this matter. The same old brush is used day after day, week after week, with never a thought that it may need a wash. Perhaps the same people would not think of using a dirty face cloth, yet never give a second thought to the cleanliness of their hair brush. Your brush should be washed once or preferably twice a week. Never, for the sake of your hair, allow it to go longer than that. A stimulating and refreshing way to brush the hair is to comb it carefully and then allow it to fall over the face. Now brush it back, away from the forehead and ears. The hair at the back of the neck will, of course, be brushed upward, and several partings can be made and the hair brushed away from them. Massage Tonic for Scalp Not less than 50 strokes should be given. Then the hair should be carefully combed with a fine tooth, but not sharp-pointed comb. Sharp teeth will irritate and break the skin on the scalp, and then infection may take place. The hair should be combed in every direction. This combing will cJectively loosen any dirt or particles of Just which may have lodged on the scalp, and a final brushing will remove them from the hair. If you would like to feel really refreshed, you can now massage the scaip with the following tonic, and then you will thoroughly feel the benefits o< this invigorating treatment: —Spirit of camphor, 2 drachms; sal volatile, 1= drachms; glycerine boracis, 3 drachms; spirit of rosemary, i -ounce; water up to 3 ounces. This lotion can be applied every third night with a piece of cotton wool.
