Mar. 19 11.16 p.m. Full Moon Mar. 27 10.42 a.m. CONDITIONS IN TIMARU The sky was bright and practically clear from dawn yesterday, but the sunshine was spoiled by the presence of a southerly wind of fair force which kept the temperature low. Records at the Timaru Park yesterday were:— Barometer—29.62. Max. temp.—sB.4. Min. temp, on grass—3l.B. Wind—S.S.W.3. Rainfall to 9.30 a.m.—.o2in. Rainfall to date this year—7.oBin. Rainfall to date last year—l3.ssin. Sunshine—lo.2 hours. Sunshine to date this year—439.6hrs. IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch: A very strong southwest wind blew during a heavily overcast morning, but the sun shone for most of the afternoon. The maximum temp, was 54.0 degrees. The barometer rose slowly to 29.85 inches. Ashburton: Wintry weather was experienced yesterday. An extremely sharp wind blew from the south-west, and although the sun shone at frequent intervals the temperature was cold. After overcast conditions all day on Wednesday, rain fell fairly heavily during the night, 28 points being recorded. Conditions were unusually cold. The total rainfall for the month to date is 92 points. Geraldine: Dull early; bright sunshine throughout the day; bitterly cold south-westerly wind. Temuka: Yesterday was fine and cold with a strong sou’wester prevailing. Rain fell steadily on Wednesday night and 11 points was recorded. The maximum temperature was 58 degrees, and the minimum 41. The glass was rising last evening. Waimate (for 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday): Thermometer, maximum 57.5; minimum 42; bright sunshine, 1 hour 54 minutes. Wind gauge: Miles run in the last 24 hours, 104. Rain, 0.6 inches: Yeste: was bright but a cold wind blew. Dunedin: After being cold and wet in the morning the weather improved during the afternoon, the sun breaking through about mid-day. A strong south-westerly breeze kept the temperature down to 52 degrees. The barometer rose slowly to 29.82 in. DOMINION METEOROLOGIST (Forecast at 4 p.m. yesterday) General situation. —Pressure is still very low to the east and a series of rather deep depressions has been crossing the Dominion, while an intense anti-cyclone remains centred over Tasmania. Winds—Moderate to strong southwesterly to southerly reaching gale force at times in exposed positions. Seas (New Zealand waters)—Rough north of Farewell Spit and south of East Cape, elsewhere moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea.—Moderate to strong southerly winds, seas mainly moderate but rather rough nearing New Zealand. Weather—Still cold and changeable with showers at times in most districts, heavy and with some hail on parts of the East Coast; mainly fair on the West Coast of the South Island but occasional showers are still probable.
