March 27, 29, 31—Metropolitan T.C Acceptances for the Wyndham Trotting Club’s meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-day. Trains will leave Timaru for the racecourse to-morrow at 11.6, 11.53, 12.8 and 12.40. The Nursery Stakes candidate Perula is closely inbred, both his sire and dam, Giro- and Wrackway, being by Wrack. Gallant Knight has won eleven times since he commenced racing about eighteen months ago, and he should make It twelve to-morrow. With only two opponents to beat in the first race at Cromwell to-day, the unlucky mare Natty has a good chance of registering her first win. Silver Sail did not race up to expectations at Gore, but she has excellent prospects of accounting for the sprint race at Cromwell.

The Dunedin winter meeting havingbeen advanced from the old Birthday dates to June 9, the Ashburton Racing Club, whose winter fixture would have been affected, has transferred from June 5 to June 26.

The stakes for the Dunedin winter meeting will be decided on after the committee has had a chance to review the racing at the Easter meetings. The club has been unfortunate this season, Che epidemic seriously affecting the Christmas fixture, while the weather frowned on the Cup meeting.

There is a width of approximately a chain and a half at the new mile starting barrier at Washdyke, and it will be possible to accommodate a big number of horses in one line. An outside position will not be such a disadvantage as in other races, as ther» is a straight run of more than two furlongs before the flrst bend is reached.

The Bigot and Old Surrey led for most of the way in the Tinakori Handicap at Trentham, well clear of Earl Colossus and Imposture. Old Surrey ran wide at the turn to the straight, and this enabled the topweight Gay Hunter, who came through on the rails from a good way back to beat him by threequarters of a length. Imposture and Sanhedren were next, but were a couple of lengths further back. The Trentham track was heavy when racing commenced yesterday, and the Rlnui Highweight went to a mudlark in the Lackham gelding Laggard, who beat the topweight Red Sun by a head. Beau Gallante led for most of the trip but failed to stay, while Red Sun tailed the Held for seven furlongs and jus; failed to get up. Laggard’s only previous placings this season, a third at Bulls, and a second and a win at Marton, were all gained on soft courses. The Lord Warden mare Myriam, making her first appearance this season, scored a clear-cut win in the Trial Plate at Trentham, from the Riccarton three-year-old Sunbeam. The favourite Nelumbo held command for most of the way, but Myriam was soon in a handy position, joined the pacemaker at the turn, and in the straight went away to score by two lengths from Sunbeam. Southern Blood beat Nelumbo on the post for third money.

Myriam was bred by Mr. J. J. Co'ry. but was sold cheaply at his dispersal sale. Another failure at Trentham we-.t down against Paper Slipper m the Thompson Handicap, but he ran better than on any previous occasion there this season, looking a winner possibly a furlong from home, and finishing fourth or fifth. The “indefinite postponement’’ of the Birchwood Hunt races may mean abandonment for the season so far as a hunt meeting is concerned, as hunters’ qualifications expire on March 31. It would not be surprising however, if the permit was used on the Invercargill course before the Southland rac.ng season concludes in the middle of May. Advice has been received that Heritage, who recently won the Eclipse Stakes at Bombay, ran second to Play On in the C. N. Wadia Gold Cup, one mile and a half, on February 27. He and Mas d’Antlbes, who ran second to him in the Eclipse Stakes, were favourites while Synagogue, who was unplaced, was next in request. Heritage was beaten bj> a length and a quarter. He will not race again till November. Stratosphere was flrst to move in the Silverstream Handicap at Trentham. but was quickly headed by Catalogue, Lucullus Lad and Reipar. At the half mile Reipar had taken charge from Catalogue, Roaming and Lucullus Lad, but in the final furlong Catalogue ran him down again and beat him by a neck. Lady Siegfried defeated Stratosphere and Roaming for the minor place. Rousseau, who seems to be getting plenty of weight for his performances, never threatened danger. When the field in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham had covered two furlongs Debham, Haut Monde. Alby. Chief Ranger, Epris, Paper Slipper and Friesland comprised the leading bunch. Arctic King was next to this lot at the half mile and coming tc the home turn. Half-way up the straight it looked as if Paper Slipo ir or Friesland would win, but Paper Slipper did not carry on, and Friesland went away to beat Chief Ranger by over a length, with Arctic King, Haut Monde or Paper Slipper next. Stiver Ring was never In the picture.

Wild Chase's win in the pt. Lcger at Trentham was foreshadowed by form, and’was anticipated by backers, but it had some unusual aspects. It was tire flrst win registered by a Paper Money horse over a journey longer than a mile and a half. Wild Chase is now the only St Leger winner as well as the flrst Derby winner by PapeMoney, and is only the second horse by that sire to win at a mile arid a half, the first, of course, being Pink Note (Dunedin Cup), It was Sir Charles Clifford’s first Leger success, and the first by the stable In the race for over 20 years.

Haughty Winner was elected favourite for the two-year-old handicap at Trentham yesterday, but Smoke Screen was solidly supported on the strength of his attractive performance at Woodville. The Limond colt won by a narrow margin from Only One, who just beat Haughty Winner. Smoke Screen is out of Curtain, and is a brother to Pelmet. This was his tnird win this season, and he may be near the top of his class bofore the campaign closes. Only One has Lad only starts in New Zealand, having been taken to Sydney in the spring by J M. Cameron. Haughty Winner ran a solid race, his big weight pulling him up just at the end in the soft going.

Timaru Trotting Cup There will be only eight starters in the Timaru Trotting Cup to-morrow, but that will probably be an advantage, as big fields seldom provide good races. The class is even, and the eight should provide a great contest. Francis Lincoln’s recent form has not been impressive, but L. A. Maidens has a knack of rejuvenating old horses. Morello would appeal more over a shorter distance, but in a slow-run race he would be dangerous. Lucky Jack’s Epsom form was very attractive, and he is sure to be one of the elect of backers. Isabel Derby is back to her best form, ai.d raced well at the summer meeting, while Village Guy is another with a liking for the Washdyke track. Pot Luck is brilliant, and while two miles may be just as far as he likes he will win if he is given a breather. Lucky Jack and Pot Luck may be the strongest contenders for the trophy.

WELLINGTON R.C. THOMPSON HANDICAP WON BY FRIESLAND By relw-anh*- Hrn= 4 ra*.carton WELLINGTON, March 11. A year ago Silver Ring 10.6 won the Thompson Handicap by a head from Friesland 7.1. Yesterday Friesland won with 8.6. while Silver Ring was never prominent. This made tne fifth successive win for O. Cox's gift horse, who was bred in Australia, being by Friarsdale from the New Zealand mare Fluency. A year or two after he was given the yearling by a New South Wales studmaster, Cox tried to sell him for £5O, but fortunately for himself failed to find a buyer. The Thompson has been a good race for the Hawera trainer, who won it twice with Reremoana and later with Golden Hair, all owned by Mr G. F. MooreGolden Hair still holds the weightcarrying record for a three-ycar-old winner.

The three-year-old championship was settled yesterday at Trentham, as most close students of form expected it would, in a convincing demonstration of the superiority of Wild Chase. Nothing that Martara had done approached in merit the Dunedin Cup victory of the Paper Money colt, and form worked out truly in the St. Leger. At the end of half a mile Martara held a lead of three lengths, but when a mile had been covered Wild Chase had moved up to within striking distance. He han up to the northmer at the home turn, and in the straight galloped away to win easing up by half a dozen lengths. After that exhibition it is reasonably safe to assume that Martara will not visit Riccarton at Easter.
