WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
ST. ANDREWS Theere was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the St. Andrews Women’s Institute, Mrs Mills presided. A welcome was extended to Mrs Bannerman. The resignations of Mrs Wimsett, Miss Begg, Miss Hyde and Miss Dash were accepted with regret. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to Sister Adams on her inclusion in the Coronation Contingent. Miss Moyle spoke about the flowershow meeting. Mrs Lyall and Mrs Bell were appointed stewards for the home industry section, and Miss D. Wilkie and Miss C. Bell for the art section. Mrs Mills was nominated for the executive. The golden thread was continued by Mrs Cague, who spoke on “Sybil Thorndike,’’ and by Mrs Mills who spoke on “Rosa Bonheur.” Mrs Lyall and Mrs Cague were appointed delegates to attend the Federation meeting at Geraldine. Mrs Trimble was appointed Press correspondent. The secretary Miss Russell, then read a very comprehensive annual report. The balance-sheet, showing a credit was presented by the treasurer. Miss W. Arden.
In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet Miss Mills thanked the secretary and treasurer for their splendid work, and for the able asistance they had been to her. She also urged members to keep their interest alive so that the Institute could advance still further. She also gave helpful suggestions to the incoming committee. The result of the election was:— President, Mrs Mills; vice-presidents, Mrs Trimble and Miss Moyle; secretary, Miss M. Russell; treasurer, Miss W. Arden; committee, Mesdames Cague, Williams, Lyall, Cook, Misses Moyle, J. Bennett, C. Bell, D. Wilkie and Miss Arden; programme committee, Mrs Mills, Miss Russell and Mrs Trimble. After afternoon tea had been served by the hostesses, an interesting demonstration of smocking was given by Miss C. Bell* A vote of thanks was accorded the demonstrator on the motion of Mrs Trimble. Musical honours were accorded Miss Dash who is shortly leaving the district. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Mills and Barber, and Miss Dash. The competitions resulted as under: Johnston cup (coffee cake). Mrs Bockaert. Martin cup (flowers), Mrs Williams. Spanish cream, Miss E. Johnston. Handkerchief, Miss E. Johnston. PAREORA Mrs Wallace presided over the February meeting of the Pareora Women’s Institute, the attendance being only fair. In the .absence of the secretary, Mrs Coote took over her duties for the afternoon. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs A. Munro and family in their recent bereavement. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to Mrs Spencer, also to write to Mrs Vincent, president of the Otipua Women’s Institute wishing her and her daughter bon voyage. Mrs Guthrie reported a successful sale' of disabled soldiers’ handwork goods. Miss Wilkes, who was proposed as a new member, sang several much appreciated songs.
The results of the afternoon’s competitions were: Bowl of flowers, Mrs Whitticase 1, Mrs Anderson 2. Specimen bloom, Mrs Beck 1, Miss L. Coote. Lettuce, Mrs Wallace 1, Mrs Hayward 2.
Later in the month a large gathering of members and friends entertained Mrs Dupree, a recent bride, at a social afternoon, when the guest of honour was the recipient of some useful gifts from her fellow members. Mrs Wallace welcomed Mrs Dupree and her mother and asked Mrs Dupree to accept the gifts with the good wishes of the Institute members. Miss Bobbie Munro danced a sailor’s hornpipe, and the Drama Circle gave a play entitled “Tap Three Times,” those taking part being Mrs Whitticase and the Misses K. Topp, Jessie Munro, N. Thompson, P. Topp, T. Skudder, and M. Hurst. Two competitions held during the afternoon were both won by Mrs A. Munro.
RANGITATA The sixth annual meeting of the Rangitata Women’s Institute was held in the Rangitata Hall. Mrs A. B. Mahan presided over a good attendance. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted and considered very satisfactory. Mrs G. A. Brown, Geraldine, took the chair while the following officers were elected—President, Mrs A. B. Mahan; committee, Mesdames G. Chalmers, G. Tate, W. Hearn, S. Palmer, W. Tate, J. Hewson, Misses W. Snell, F. Palmer. H. Chalmers, M. Hearn and J. Shaw. Mrs Brown read a most interesting paper on the advancement of women throughout the ages, which was much appreciated. The monthly competitions resulted as follows:—Tomato relish, Miss H. Chalmers 1, Miss W. Snell 2, Mrs G. Tate 3. Best decorated cake, Miss W. Snell 1, Miss E. Shaw 2, Miss J. Shaw 3. Prizes given by Mrs G. Chalmers for most points gained at last two months’ competitions were then presented, the winners being Miss W. Snell 1 and Mrs G. Tate 2. Afternoon tea provided by the president was then dispensed. Competitions for next month will be —Ginger cake, best laundered fancy folded table napkin and premier bloom.
