Acceptances for the handicap events at the Timaru Trotting Club’s fixture ar? due by 9 p.m. to-morrow.

Francis Drake is among those left in the Auckland Champagne Stakes when forfeits were due on Friday.

Martara is still in the Great Northern St. Leger, so that it is not certain that he will be seen at Riccarton this season.

Pride of Central, a rather unrully Nightraid gelding which recently went into F. D. Jones’s stable, tossed his rider at the barrier at Motukarara on Saturday and then rolled on the ground. The field ' was despatched without him.

Another of this season’s big Australian handicaps—the Australian Cup—has gone to an outsider. Mutable starting at a long price. Cuddle led for nearly two miles and then faded, while Mutable came from a good way back to win after a great fight with the hurdler Pooley Bridge.

Cuddle did net finish last in this year’s Australian Cup, but she beat only one or two horses home. Australians will regard this as further evidence that the mare cannot stay, but many New Zealanders will not be satisfied on that score until they see her fail with L. J. Ellis up. At the Washdyke course at 8.30 tomorrow, maiden pacers and trotters will be given another opportunity to obtain barrier practice and to have a run on the inside of the racing track with colours up. The experience gained at these trials should be valuaole to young horses engaged at the Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday, The maiden allowance did not benefit' Country Party’s connections in the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield. It ‘empted them to go for a big win, and the New Zealander was sent out second favourite. He ran a decent race, but could not get closer than fourth, and he will not be so favourably weighted r.galn. Listed for Riccarton at Easter, the Hawera pair, Friesland and Lowenberg may be found taking a prominent part in the decision of the Great Easter and Autumn Handicaps, a double that O. Cox just failed to land when Reremoana won the Ea-ster and Lady Desmond was narrowly defeated in the Autumn. Bonny Azure fairly outstayed the favourites, King’s Warrior and Big Author in the Armstrong Handicap at Hutt Park, coming from behind them to win decisively by two lengths from Recess, who beat King’s Warrior by three lengths. King’s Warrior was in front at the turn and his finish was disappointing. Recess showed the first signs of real form this season. Nolana, who paid a huge dividend in a division of the Juvenile Stakes at Motukarara is by Nightraid, and is a sister to Rose of Tralee. She gave C. T. Wilson a win on his first ride since his suspension expired. Bonny Agnes, who beat her more fancied stable-mate Happy Night in the other division, is by Nightraid, and’ is a half sister to Cvzcet Agnes.

Three Washdyke-trained juveniles claim an engagement in the Timaru Nursery Stakes, to be run at the Trotting Club's meeting next Saturday. They are Mr T. M. Brosnan’s Battlevale (Man-o-War—Golden Vale), a sister to Battlefield and Marsceres; Mr H. McMillan’s Lady Milne (Man-o-War—Lady Antrim); and Mr W. A. Piddington’s Ceres (Frank Worthy— Logan Pointer mare).

The Queensland champion Pamelus, who was beaten by Gold Rod In the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield, had his revenge in the Lloyd Stakes at Flemington. Pamelus had been rather unlucky in Victoria this season, being narrowly defeated in several important events, including the Cantala Stakes, Futurity and Newmarket Handicap, and having won only one race. He is likely to be favourite for the Doncaster at Randwick.

The American colt Starwyn gave a demonstration of his real quality by strolling away from the opposition in the trial handicap at Wellington on Saturday. Beginning smartly he was soon in the lead, and at one stage in the second round he was going easily half a dozen lengths in front. Starwyn has had a good many detractors, but now that he has acclimatised he is likely to go on winning.

The crack Victorian hurdler Pooley Bridge on Saturday made a brave attempt to emulate the deeds of other jumpers such as Realm and Marmont and win the Australian Cup. He was rather unlucky in bumping against a ligtaly-welghted stayer in Mutable. The winner’s time, 3.51, was only half a second outside NadeanT race record of 3.501. The Australian record for the distance Is 3.491, made by Phar Lap.

Ti’.'o horses were inadvertently left in the Timaru Nursery Stakes when final forfeits were due, and these have now been withdrawn. There are still 23 two-year-olds eligible to start, and It is certain that the number will

greatly exceed the dozen that went to the post last year. There may be two brackets on the machine—Dancing Pirate and Warwick, from J. Bell’s stable; and Horsepower and Florentine, trained by R. B. Berry. • • • V During the running of the Randwick Handicap at Wellington on Saturday, Swordsman and Franz Derby were going well when the last-named put a foot through a wheel of the American trotter’s sulky. F. J. Smith was tipped out, and both horses had to be pulled up. They were more fortunate in the two mile event later in the afternoon, Franz Derby winning by a length from Swordsman, who broke under pressure near the winning post. Bonny Azure and King’s Warrior dead-heated at Hutt Park last month, and met again on the same terms on the same course on Saturday. This time Bonny Azure worsted her former stable mate, and was placed again in the sprint race, though in this she had no chance with the American horse Gallant Knight. She is on the small side, but she has a wonderful percentage of wins to starts during the last three seasons. Her next appearance will be made from the 4.25 mark.

“Gold Rod’s brilliant victory in the Caulfield Futurity Stakes, may be regarded as the best recorded by a horse of his age in Australia.” Again: “In winning the Futurity Stakes Golo Rod made racing history. “It was Gold Rod’s finishing run that inspired this enthusiasm on the part of Australian writers, but ■it was entirely the colt’s own fault that he was five lengths behind the leaders at the half mile. He dropped the bit and would not gallop until the concluding stages.

The three-year-old trotter Gerfalcan appears to have reached a mark which has halted his progress in the meantime. He was sent out favourite for the Randwick Handicap at Hutt Park, but just missed a place. The Nelson gelding Tommy Boy was in front all the way. Mother’s Boy went off with him but broke and dropped out, and Bronte, who was alongside him with a lap to go, was beaten off easily in the r m home. Indolent trotted more steadily than usual and defeated Bronte for second money. There were many who thought Lady Kyra was not tuned up properly when she paraded for the Flying Handicap at Opunake. The wet tracks had prevented her trainer, W. Mantle, from giving her quite as much galloping as he might have desired. However, Lady Kyra experienced no difficulty in accounting for her opponents. She had the race won almost as soon as the straight was reached and was well clear a hundred yards from the judge. Lady Kyra is a better mare than is generally believed.

Golden Promise, who has gone amiss in Victoria after winning the King's Plate, was bred at Wanganui by Mr G. F. Moore, and is by Limond from Lady Bentwick. He was included with the yearlings offered by auction at Trentham in the summer of 1934. The bidding reached only 350 guineas, and he did his first racing for Mr Moore, being sold after winning the Canonbury Stakes at Randwick to Mrs M. J. MacKinnon and Mr D. S. MacKinnon, of Melbourne. At three years old he was sold at auction for 800 guineas, Mr J. M. Niall being the buyer. A patient policy had to be observed with the colt, with the result that he did not fulfil any engagements last season. He has paid his way well this season by winning several good races. J. J. Lewis of Ashburton, one of the oldest trainers in the Dominion, intends to retire from the business. Among the good horses he has trained were Lady Lillian (Great Easter and Great Autumn), Welbeck, Calibre and Wharncliffe (G. N. Hurdles) and General Petain. At different times he prepared horses for Messrs E. Gates and J. C. N. Grigg and later for Mr J. H. Grigg and other members of the family. Mr Lewis commenced his association with racing in Timaru a very long time ago, and was a good patron of the up country fixtures which have disappeared from the calendar. In his youth he was keenly interested in athletics, and later on his services were m frequent demand as timekeeper, a position which he still holds at meetings of the Timaru Trotting Club.
