TEKAPO SALE

DISPOSAL OF ANNUAL DRAFTS VALUES IRREGULAR Irregular values ruled at the annual Tekapo sale which was held on Saturday with the advantage of a fine day and brilliant sunshine. Generally, prices were lower than those obtained at the sale last year. On an average, however, pens were sold at levels which reflected recent North Canterbury rates. The best sale made during the day was that of 303 threequarter-bred ewe lambs from the Wolds station, the price being 33/2, a figure which undoubtedly is one of the highest obtained for lambs this season. Another high-priced draft was 235 soundmouth half-bred ewes from Mount Cook station which brought 25/-. The total yarding was more than 30,000, and even though sheep were not seen at their best owing to travelling long distances, their condition was generally up to that of previous years. A time limit of one minute was imposed for the auctions, and considerably hastened the progress of what could be termed a large sale. All arrangements had been thoroughly completed, and reflected credit on the Saleyards Company. Most of the sheep in the Tekapo sale are either purchased for similar country or for the Canterbury plains, and a probable factor influencing prices is that the abnormally wet season has prevented many farmers on the plains from clearing their fat stock, and what is more, others have been able to fill their requirements from local sales. In the early part of the sale a fair number of pens were passed, but in most cases sale;: were effected privately. Apart from Canterbury buyers, a number were present from Central Otago. Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., opened the sale in his capacity as chairman of the Tekapo Saleyards Company. He welcomed buyers into the heart of a district famed for its 64-count Merino wool. "Notwithstanding the fact that Watty Nash is away home and most of us are working for him,” he said, ‘I am sure you will still have the confidence to bid your best.”
