DOWNLANDS SCHEME
GOOD PROGRESS WITH CANVASS “We have had very few refusals, and actually we are making splendid progress,” said Mr A. J. Davey, chairman of the Downlands Water Supply Investigation Committee, - when discussing with a representative of “The Timaru Herald” the canvass now being made. He expressed confidence that the £200,000 project would materialise. “If the response to the canvass is anything like as liberal in the remainder of the area as it has been in the portion covered so far, the scheme Will go through, and I have no reason to think that the response will not be as liberal,” Mr Davey said in answer to an inquiry.
The canvass to see if the Mackenzie, Geraldine, and Levels counties’ share —£7ooo annually,—could be raised had made very good progress, he said. The largest area, of about 60,000 acres, lying north-west of Timaru, had almost been completed by the canvassers, who had met with little short of a 100 per cent, favourable response. The remaining area on the south-west side of Timaru would be canvassed shortly. A meeting would probably be held at Pareora to enable details of the scheme to be explained to residents and land-holders.
