Mr John Coyle (Auckland) is staying at the Empire. Mr G. J. Woodbury (Christchurch) is staying at the Dominion. Messrs S. M. Westlake, G. A. Wilson (Dunedin), and W. J. Mowatt (Kaikorai) are staying at the Grand. Fireman P. Sullivan, of the Timaru Fire Brigade, left yesterday to attend the annual conference and demonstration of Fire Brigades to be held in Nelson. Messrs P. A. Thomson (Culverden) ,■ V. LeCren (Fairlie), C. A. Harris (Gisborne), A. Read, A. K. Firth and R. F. Ballantyne (Christchurch) are staying at the Grosvenor. Dr. Karl Popper, the newly appointed lecturer in Education and Philosophj’ at Canterbury University College, and Mrs Popper, are due to arrive in Wellington on March 12 by the Rangitata. Mr V. E. de Malmanche, construction inspector for the Public Workg Department, retires on superannuation this month after 35 years’ service. Mr de Malmanche’s last work has been the supervision of the erection of the Fairfield bridge across the Waikato River. At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Timaru Central Relief Society before the annual meeting, appreciative reference was made to the efficient services rendered to the Society by the secretary and treasurer (Mr E. G. Cliffin) during the six years of the Society’s existence, and it was unanimously agreed that a letter of appreciation be sent to him by the chairman.
