A BUSY DAY

MR SULLIVAN’S SOUTHERN TOUR By Telegraph —Press Association INVERCARGILL. March 5. The Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, spent a busy day today. In the morn’ng he heard deputations at Invercargill, and Bluff, and later made a tour of inspection of the railway lines in the Western District. He returned to Invercargill at 8.30 tonight, and met more deputations, after which he attended a social function. To-morrow he will visit other parts of Southland and go to Te Anau for the week-end.

A request for "a fair and square” Investigation into the resources of the Orepuki shale works was made to the Minister to-day by representatives of the Orepuki Progress League. The works have been closed for 30 years and from time to time reports have been obtained, but according to the deputation, these reports have not been satisfactory. One speaker claimed that it was estimated that there was about a million tons of shale available for treatment.

The Minister, in reply, said that the Departments of Mines and Industries and Commerce would try to estimate if the reopening of the works would be an economic proposition or not.
