PLEASANT POINT
SUCCESSFUL DANCE Under the auspices of the Ex-Pupils' Association a very successful dance was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening. Approximately 100 couples attended. The winners of the competitions were:—Monte Carlo: Miss M. Brophy and Mr Kernahan; lucky spot, Miss R. Popplewell and Mr McKenzie. FAREWELL SOCIAL Before her departure for Makikihi, where she has been appointed temporarily to the staff to the school, Miss Margaret Cleland was farewelled at a very pleasant function at the District High School yesterday. Mr S. Gibb, headmaster, expressed his regret at Miss Cleland’ departure. He had hoped that she might be permanently on the Pleasant Point staff. Miss Cleland had had a long association with the school, as she had been on the staff both before and after attending the Training College. He emphasised her sterling capabilities as a teacher, her quiet efficiency and her pleasant, friendly manner in school and towards the staff. In presenting her with a luminous clock from the staff, Mr Gibb said that their small token carried with it their most sincere good wishes for her future career.
Mr A. K. Easterbrook, senior secondary assistant, thanked Miss Cleland for always being ready to place at the disposal of the older teachers her more modem training, especially on the artistic side. He knew that her particular capabilities would be invaluable on any staff, and, and he wished her a successful and happy career. Mr F. E. Malcolmson, as a teacher and also as a rifle club member, expressed his regret at Miss Cleland’s departure. He thanked her for her assistance in school work and referred to her sporting activities, mentioning the fact that while a member of the local rifle club she had been second in a New Zealand shoot. He hoped she would carry on in the Makikihi Club, where she would have a formidable rival in the South Canterbury champion of champions, Mrs Gorinski. He wished her every success in the future. Miss A. M. Macßean thanked Miss Celand for her excellent work among the younger girls in sport and in drill. She was proud to remember that Miss Cleland was leaving Pleasant Point with a first-class pass as a New Zealand basketball referee. Those present were Mr and Mrs Gibb, Mr and Mrs Malcolmson, Mrs Cartwright, Misses Cleland, Price, MacBean, Oed, Grocott, and Mr A. K. Eastbrook.
