SUCCESS OF BAND

COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL PRESENTATIONS MADE In recognition of their outstanding success at the contest at- Nelson, members of the Timaru Municipal Band were entertained at a complimentary social in the band room last evening, when the Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell). Borough Councillors, band officials and friends were also present. Complimentary speeches, by means of which the band acknowledged its gratitude to various officers and friends, were made. The opportunity was also taken to make several presentations. During the function, enjoyable items were given by Miss Lilian McDonald, Mr R. R. Wills and Mr R. Milligan, after which supper was served. . Mr J. Hole, patron of the band, who presided, congratulated the band and also individual players on their success at Nelson, which he described as wonderful. He said he had attended many functions connected with the band, but none had given him greater pleasure than the welcome home accorded bandsmen on their return from Nelson. Tribute to Drum-Major. The Mayor presented to DrumMajor W. Angus a medal to commemorate his feat of leading the band to victory in the quickstep. The Mayor extended his congratulations to all bandsmen on their success. The Mayor’s remarks were supported by Crs. W. H. Hall. A. S. Kinsman and A. G. Foster. The toast of the winners of the quickstep wss proposed by Mr W. Andrews, who said that from his experience he could well realise just how outstanding was the achievement of the band. On behalf of the band, the conductor (Lieutenant W. H. Osborne) made a presentation to Mr J. Morgan, who was the accompanist for individual performers at the contest. Mr Osborne spoke in very complimentary terms of Mr Morgan's work and good fellowship. Mr Morgan made a suitable acknowledgement of the present. Honour for Conductor. Cr. A. S. Kinsman, who was supported by Mr C. M. Lagan, presented to Mr Osborne a gold-mounted baton, awarded to the conductor whose band secured the highest marks for music in the quickstep at the contest. Mr Osborne, in acknowledging the tributes paid to him and the band, thanked all who had given assistance, especially mentioning M~ C. G. Baker (secretary) and Miss Lilian McDonald. The band also appreciated very highly the keen interest of the Mayor. Commenting on the kindness of Mr Hole. Mr Osborne described him as having a deep and lasting affection for the band. In conclusion Mr Osborne thanked Drum-Major Angus, the officers and members of the band for their continued loyalty He felt that the bandsmen formed a good enough combination to accomplish almost anything He commented on the number of good friends the band had and he thanked the performers for the enjoyable numbers they had contributed. Cup Presented. The enthusiasm of the bandsmen and their wives was exemplified by the action of Mr and Mrs Reg. Williams, who to celebrate the anniversary of tl.eir wedding presented a silver cup to the bandsman gaining the highest points in any solo event at the contest. Mr Vic Abraham, who was awarded 93 points in th' E flat bass solo, was the recipient of the trophy, which was presented last evening.
