CONSOLIDATION OF SCHOOLS MOUNT NESSING REQUEST GRANTED Advice has been received by the secretary of the Mt. Nessing School Committee (Mr C. T. Norton), that the Education Board has acceded to the committee’s request for the conveyance of the school children to Albury School by bus. Consolidation has been under consideration in the Mt. Nessing and Chamberlain districts for some time, and there was a difference of opinion as to whether one bus or two were necessary. Yesterday when the matter was referred to Mr G. W. Armitage, a member of the Education Board, for comment, he said the Board was convinced that only one bus was necessary. With regard to a contention that the road joining Vie two districts was not suitable for a bus route, the Board was satisfied that there were no grounds for an objection and, moreover, an assurance had been obtained from the . Mackenzie County Council to the effect that any alterations deemed necessary would be effected. The Board, he added, could not see any reason why there should be two buses. MACKENZIE COLLIE CLUB POINTS FIXED FOR EVENTS A meeting of the Mackenzie Collie Club was held at Burke’s Pass on Saturday night. Mr C. Hay ter, the president, was in the chair. On the motion of Mr A. Driving: Through first flag 6, second flag 6, to ring 4, yard work 6, yarding 5, style 5. command 5. Entry fees were fixed at 1/- for every £1 of prize money. For non-members a higher scale is to be decided. GENERAL NEWS Warm weather with bright sunshine during the last few days, has done much towards counteracting the adverse seasonal conditions which so seriously affected farm work. Crops are turning fast, and in order to make up for lost time it is anticipated that if the good weather holds, there will be a fairly heavy demand for farm labour. In the Mount Nessing district, harvesting in general should commence in about a fortnight’s time, though one or two early crops have already been cut.

PERSONAL Mrs W. Perry and Misses M. Bell, E. Braddick and M. Giddings, Fairlie, have returned from a camping holiday at Tekapo. Mr William Simpson, Mount Nessing, who has been spending a holiday in Nelson as the guest of Mr and Mrs James Logan, has returned home. M!iss Nora Winter of the staff of the Dunedin hospital, is spending her vacation with her parents, Mr and Mrs Arnold Winter, Mount Nessing. Miss C. Irving, “Brownhill,” Mount Nessing, is spending a holiday at Mount Cook. Mrs W. Olsen of Eketahuna, is at present staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs John Bray, Fair lie. Mr Harry Bray, of Wellington, is also visiting his parents. COUNCIL COTTAGE AT TEKAPO In answer to a question from Mr George Murray at Friday’s meeting of the Mackenzie County Council, the engineer (Mr D. Jeune) said inquiries had been made about State assistance for building a Council cottage at Tekapo, but all the replies had dealt with a housing scheme for the county. “I think it is hardly fair,” said Mr A. F. Campbell “to ask Councils totrke control of housing schemes. If anyone wants to build a house, let him apply to the Government himself. Are Councils supposed to take control of the finance?” The chairman: (Mr C. J. Talbot): Yes. Mr Campbell: Well, I don’t think it is fair. Mr George Murray said he had suggested the erection of a Council cottage at Tekapo for a surfaceman partly because the man’s wife would be able to supervise the motor camping grounds and during holidays, when there was a large number of people about, the surfaceman himself would be free to attend to the matter. VISIT OF HIGHWAYS BOARD Several matters were considered by the Mackenzie County Council at its meeting on Friday in connection with the visit of the Highways Board to Fairlie next month. One of the chief items is to have the Mount Nessing road declared a highway, it being considered that more traffic travelled on that route than on any other side road in the county. Mr P. Kidd said that an additional reason for declaring the road a highway was that it connected with the Rollesby Valley road. ST. JOHN’S WORT A letter was received by the Mackenzie County Council at its meeting on Friday from Mr A. Agnew drawing attention to the prevalence of a weed on the roadside fronting his property. The chairman (Mr C. J. Talbot) said the weed was St. John’s Wort and it was fairly common throughout the county. As it was not on the noxious weeds schedule, Mr Agnew would have to make application for its inclusion, which, if granted would permit the clearing of the weed to be enforced.
