LOCAL INDUSTRIES

development favoured By Telegraph—Press Association NELSON, January 30. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Hon. D. G. Sullivan) spent yesterday in a tour of the Nelson District, visiting the Cawthron Institute and proceeding to Motueka, where he received deputations on questions of an improved shipping service at the port, and on tobacco matters. Points put up to the Minister regarding tobacco were the policy of the Board, with particular reference to the Government plan for the betterment of the industry, the establishing of an experimental farm for research, and the position with regard to labour matters. The Minister said he was proud of the industry of the people in accomplishing so much in so short a time, and he believed the Cabinet would agree with his view regarding the development of this industry. It was desirable to develop local industries and extend them to the material advantage of the Dominion. Mr Sullivan is on his way to the Coast. The Minister was given a cordial welcome by a large attendance at a civic reception by the Mayor (Mr G Page), councillors and representatives of other bodies. Warm tributes were paid to Mr Sullivan’s civic life in Christchurch, and his handling of three important portfolios. Mr Sullivan left en route for the West Coast this morning.
