TAITORU WINS BIG RACE By Telegraph—Pres# Association WANGANUI, January 30. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s summer meeting was concluded in fine weather but a boisterous wind was blowing. The totalisator handled £5,415/10/-, making £27,422 for the meeting, compared with £18,760/10/last year, an increase of £8672. Results: FORDELL HURDLES Of £130; 12i furlongs. 2—Beau Gallante, 11.13 C. Thomson) 1 4—Royal Routine, 9.2 (C. McGovern) 2 1— Court Arma, 10.0 (L. Dulieu) .. 3 Also started: 5 Just an Idea 9.3, 3 Sorcery 9.0. Won by six lengths; four lengths between second and third. Sorcery was fourth. Time—2min 50 2-5 sec. Beau Gallante was in front all the way and won pulling up. JUVENILE HANDICAP Of £100; 5 furlongs. 2 Aiwai, 9.9 (P. Atkins) 1 4—Gaily, 7.9 (C. Cole) 2 3 Airini, 7.7 (R. Marsh) 3 Also started: 1 Scarf Dance 7.12, 7 Lickem 7.12, 5 Trim car 7.115, 8 Pontoon 7.9, 6 Ripple 7.7. 9 Fafner 7.7, 10 Amatory car. 7.9. Won by half a length, a neck between second and third. Pantoon was fourth. Trim and Aiwai made the pace to the straight, with Gaily, Airini and Scarf Dance following. Aiwai led into the home stretch and easily held Gaily and Airini in a clcse finish. B.BL Won by two lengths, a head between second and third. Time—lmin 15 4 Glynne Park led Parakino to the straight, but Parakino finished strongly to win decisively. BRUNSWICK HANDICAP Of £115; 7i furlongs. 2 Red Sand, 8.12 (B. H. Morris) .. 1 3 Hatuma, 9.12 (J. Leach) 2 4 Mister Quex, 8.12 (D. Lamb) .... 3 Also started: 1 Cloudy Bay 8.3, 7 Missal 8.0, 6 Blue Mauritius car. 8.25, 5 Mazzini 8.0. Won by half a length, a neck between second and third. Missal was fourth. Time—lmin 32sec. Blue Mauritius was the pacemaker from Mister Quex, Cloudy Bay, Hatuma and Red Sand. In a good finish Red Sand did best, beating Hatuma and Mister Quex narrowly. WANGANUI HACK HANDICAP Of £115; 15 Smiles. 2 Le Grand, 8.7 (P. Burgess) .. .. 1 3 Corowa, 8.2 (S. Anderson) .. .. 2 I—The Buzzer, 8.8 (B. H. Morris) .. 3 Also started: 5 Reipar car. 7.6, 4 Master Limond car. 7.10, 6 Nightlass car.- 7.85. Won by a length and a half, two lengths between second and third. Master Limond was fourth. Time—2min 9 2-ssec. Nightlass was : the early pacemaker, but Master LiI mond and The Buzzer moved up at the five furlongs post. The Buzzer led for home, closely followed by Nightlass and Corowa. Le Grand was last, but finished brilliantly to win well from Corowa and The Buzzer. EARLE STAKES Of £200; 1 mile and a distance 1— Taitoru, car. 8.2 (L. Dulieu) .... 1 5 Grand Jury, 8.9 (R. J. Flower) .. 2 2 Master Cyklon, 8.6 (P. Atkins) .. 3 Also started: 3 Geitel 7.13, 7 Entail 7.12, 8 Black Friar car. 7.2, 6 Blue Garter car. 7.2, 4 Full Throttle 7.7. Won by a length and a half, a neck between second and third. Geitel was fourth. Time—lmin 56 2-ssec. Full Throttle, Blue Garter, Master Cyklon and Taitoru were always prominent and the last named led for home with Grand Jury on the outer and Geitel on the inner, challenging. In a good finish Taitoru won nicely, Grand Jury hanging on to beat Master Cyklon and Geitel. CAMPBELL HANDICAP Of £165; 6 furlongs. 4 Notium, car. 7.5 (C. Cole) 1 1— Lavina, 8.5 (P. Atkins) 2 3 Brazen King, car. 7.13 (J. McCauley) 3 Also started: 2 Karl 8.13, 8 Refresher 8.8, 5 Ned Cuttie 7.8, 7 Symcony 7.7. Won by a length, a head between second and third. Karl was fourth. Time —lmin 12 4-ssec. Symcony, Lavina, Karl, Brazen King and Notium was the order into the straight. Notium finished best and beat Lavina, Brazen King and Karl by just over a length the others being almost in line. MATARAWA HACK HANDICAP Of £100; 5 furlongs. 2 Collodion, 8.2 (W. J. Broughton) 1 I—Rustem, 8.12 (P. Burgess) .. ..2 5 Etiquette, car. 7.10 (P. Atkins) .. 3 Also started: 4 All Spirit 7.8, 6 Kia Ora car. 7.2, 3 Merlyn 7.7, 7 Exquisite car. 7.45. Won by two lengths, same distance between second and third. Time—lmin 2sec. Kia Ora was the early leader but Collodion was in charge at the home turn with Kia Ora, Rustem and Etiquette next. Collodion did best over the last bit and won comfortably.
Backers selected Toorak as the most likely proposition for the Stewards’ Handicap at Forbury on Saturday. The Champion Stakes winner paced a creditable race, but was just unable to reach a place. Shandon Chimes, Silver Laddie, Old Faithful and Seaward de Oro soon threw away their chances. Molly Direct led Intrigue and Lord Axworthy over the first furlong, but Intrigue soon took charge and at the mile the three-year-old was carrying on from Diversion, Lord Axworthy and Molly Direct. It was the same as they left the straight the last time, but three furlongs from home Diversion ran to the lead from Molly Direct and Intrigue, and the Rey de Oro mare ran in a comfortable winner from Moily Direct, with Mohican and Toorak, who were brought down by Irish Aggie on Thursday, third and fourth respectively.
