DEAR LITTLE PEOPLE. The fifth city of New Zealand draws near' and our car runs along the banks of the beautiful Wanganui River. We take a sharp turn over a bridge and are in the City of Wanganui itself. Those of us who know Christchurch well, know how much charm a little river can lend a town. We have memories of shady little backwaters and never-ending changes that come with the snake-like twists of the Avon. The Wanganui is different. It inarches boldly on, for it is a river of great dignity and size. When it turns, it does so slowly and with becoming decorum. From the river and from the surrounding hills, Wanganui gets most of its personality. The river with its great depth and mighty volume, on which overseas ships can ride at anchor, is the strength of Wanganui. The little hills, each of his own shape and height, add charm to the city. One hill we certainly must make ourselves acquainted with and that is Di.rie Hill. Here we can get a thrill that we can get nowhere else in New Zealand —the thrill of climbing a hill by lift. We enter the tunnel and walk right into the very middle of the hill. Here we buy a ticket and enter the lift. Up and up it goes until it brings us safely to the top and wc step out to a place where we can see the city and admire the bird's-eye view that lies beneath us. We shall walk down and then we shall have more leisure to see and admire. Before we leave we shall go for another little hill excur-> sion. This time the hill is small and we shall not need the friendly services of a lift to take us to the fine Art Gallery. We climb by a magnificent flight of steps that lead to the Sargent Galleries. Here at our ease we roam through the halls feasting our eyes. We return to our car and, touring the city, we pry into its secrets. Passing fine schools, and stately homes, and catching ever-changing views of river and hills, we learn the
secret of why Wanganui citizens are so proud of their city. Best Wishes to You All, FROM
