PURPLE AND GOLD
THE QUEEN’S GOWN Queen Elizabeth, when she is crowned as Queen Consort with King George VI at Westminster Abbey on May 12, wiU wear a robe of Royal purple and a cape of ermine, states the “Daily Mall.” Under her robe, which will have a train 18ft long, she will wear a white satin gown, exquisitely embroidered in silver and gold. The presence of a Queen at the Coronation will make a difference to the appearance of the peereeses, who in their deep crimson velvet robes and kirtles will provide a rich background for her Majesty’s purple robe. When a Queen is crowned peeresses wear coronets, instead of tiaras, as is the case at the coronation of a bachelor King.
Metal portions of a coronet—which costs from £l5 to £4o—are of silver gilt, the cap is of crimson velvet turned with ermine, and has a gold tassel on top. It is placed on the head of a peeress at the actual moment that the Queen is crowned.
